Mr. Roy Melvin Benton, passed away Wednesday, November 20, 2024. A wake will take place Tuesday, December 3, 2024 from 5 pm - 7 pm in the Cassie Coote-Brown Memorial Chapel at Perry J. Brown Funeral Home located at 909 East Market Street in Greensboro, North Carolina. Burial will follow on Wednesday, December 4, 2024 at 1 pm at the Salisbury National Cemetery in Salisbury, North Carolina.
Roy Melvin Benton, affectionately known as "Melvin" to his family and friends, was born on September 1, 1945, in Guilford County, North Carolina. He was the son of the late Jerry Leavance Benton and the late Annie Louise Benton. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Peggy Benton, and his son, Roy Melvin Benton II.
Melvin was educated in the Guilford County School System. A Vietnam veteran, he served in the U.S. Army. Following his military service, he was employed by Brown Trucking and AAA Cooper Trucking Company, where he retired after 30 years of service.
In August 1971, Melvin met and married Peggy Herbin. They lived in Greensboro, North Carolina during their 50-year union.
Melvin was a member of American Legion Hut Post 53, where he enjoyed calling and playing Bingo and fellowship with other veterans. He never met a stranger, a quality that was evident in his joy for visiting and spending time with family and friends, traveling, playing cards, fishing, following the Indianapolis Colts, golfing, hosting the Annual Benton Family Thanksgiving. He especially cherished his grandchildren, always encouraging them in their endeavors.
Melvin went home to be with the Lord on November 19, 2024. He leaves to cherish his loving memory his children: Marissa Benton-Brown (Danny) of Greensboro, NC; Ira Benton (LaKesha) of Greensboro, NC; Octavious Benton (Cherie) of Reno, NV; and Alexis Benton (Nakisha) of Greensboro, NC; siblings: Michelle Benton of Greensboro, NC; Earnest Benton of Siler City, NC; Larry Benton (Antionette) of Greensboro, NC; Charles Benton (Gwendolyn) of Charleston, SC; grandchildren, Claire Benton, Kia Brown, Celeste Brown, RaVaughn Hatcher-Brown, Corbin Benton, Ashlyn Benton, Micheal Fields, Jr., Ava Rawles, Bryce Benton, Tia Benton, Octavious Benton II, Christian Sarpy; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
It was a pleasure knowing you Roy the short time we had. You were funny and I enjoyed talking to you and laughing. To the family I'm sorry for your lost may God continue to keep each of you. RIH Mr. Benton.
