Obituary For Bennie H. Graves, Jr.

Bennie H. Graves Jr, 64, of Winston-Salem, NC died October 30, 2021. There will be NO public viewing. A graveside service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 13,2021 at Garrett’s Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery, Gibsonville, NC.

Bennie Hubert Graves, Jr. of Madison, NC was born on November 22nd, 1956 and went to be with the Lord on October 30th, 2021. He graduated from Rockingham High School in 1975, then attended Appalachian State University. He devoted his life to his love of trucking. Bennie spent the next four decades successfully owning and operating Bennie Graves Trucking in Winston-Salem, NC where he lived for most of his adult life. He shared over 34 years of precious memories with Stella G. and they were blessed with children.

Bennie spent the last few years on this earth with end stage renal failure. Everyday was a physical and mental struggle, yet he was as positive as he could be. He loved to share his goofy jokes with whoever would listen. He was an incredibly genuine father, son, brother, mentor and good-hearted friend to many. His last reflections on this life were of satisfaction. He said he did everything he wanted to do: have a family, travel all over, share compassion with the community, and enjoy the trucking life. Though this earthly ending did not go as planned, he would always say to hold your head up high and keep on trucking.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Bennie Graves and Carrie Graves (Martin) and his sister, Ellen Martin.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his life partner Stella G.; son: Apollo Graves; daughters: Asia and Nichole Graves; sisters: Myrtle (Lewis) Kee, Edith (Arthur) Wiley, Rosetta (d. Lawrence) Williamson, Frances Graves, Louise (Quentin) Smith, Annie Lee (d. Ricky) Spain, Gayle Graves, Patricia Graves; brothers: Julius (Toni) Graves, Timothy (Terrie) Graves; many nieces and nephews, and even more close friends that might as well be family.

My dad will always be my hero, my Superman. As a little girl, my dad was my world, my protection and loving comfort. His love for life brought so many loving memories to my life over the years. He was "dangerous dad" because he always wanted us to be safe in whatever we were doing. He loved old school love songs and dancing even when there wasn't any music playing. He loved basketball and big trucks. He created a network that touched so many people's lives with his business that he built from the ground up. He worked hard and long hours for many years. He was the man of our home and he certainly did his job as a dad in making sure the standard was high for my future husband. We ate at K&W together at least 2-3 times a week, it became daddy-daughter time. He loved their turkey and dressing. Not once did I think he couldn't beat his illness.. I guess that's why it hurts so bad. Not a day goes by that I don't think about him. I don't think I'll ever get over not seeing him again, but at least I can feel his spirit with me every time the pain comes around again. God took a soul so full of light and love. Thank you for being everything I needed in a dad. I wouldn't trade you for the world ever. Love you forever, dad! Until we meet again, continue to guide, protect and love me from the other side!

Sorry to hear about Bennie's passing and we offer our condolences to the family. The last time I saw Bennie was at the last class reunion and we talked about the moving business. He was just like I remembered, up and positive, a great sense of humor and laughing. Dwight & Cindy Vestal

Other than us playing basketball, the one thing I'll always remember is that our sophomore year at Madison-Mayodan we were on the JV team that went 0-21. Bennie was our best player, and he was moved up to the Varsity for the Tournaments. We won the 1973 State 3-A Championship in Durham, and the reception at the M-M auditorium when they got back, each player gave a short speech, and Bennie's was the best of the evening when he commented "I'm just glad to be on a winning team"!! Bennie was VERY well liked by all, and we kept in touch on Facebook. Continued prayers for the Graves family.

I will always miss you BIG BROTHER. You taught me how to respect people and work hard at what you do in life. By working and not complaining about simple stuff in life, I copied your attitude about life. Love you BIG BROTHER, baby brother Tim. ❤
