Mrs. Bessie Carleen Claybrooks Scales,95, of Madison, died April 18, 2020. SERVICES WILL BE PRIVATE......Burial will be held at Collins Cemetery, Madison, NC.

Mrs. Bessie “Carleen” Claybrooks Scales was born September 20, 1924 in Rockingham County, NC to the late Henry Claybrooks and Bessie Lou Scales Claybrooks. She passed away peacefully at UHC Rockingham Nursing Center at the age of 95 years on Saturday, April 18, 2020. Carleen received her early childhood education and graduated high school from the Madison Colored School System. She was a motivator and an inspiration for many people in the Madison-Mayodan community. She touched the lives of many children of all races, encouraging them to do their best in life. Carleen married the late James P. “Bill” Scales in 1949 and to this beautiful union, they were blessed with four sons; James, Calvin, Timothy and Michael. Carleen gave her life to God and was baptized at an early age. She was a devoted member of Mt. Carmel Holiness Church. Her faithful attendance, contribution to the mission and ministries of the church through the Missionary Circle, Bible Study, Sr. Choir and other church committees was shown until her declining health. She was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, sister and aunt. She led a full and productive Christian life. She was also preceded in death by her son, Timothy Ray Scales, granddaughters, Jamie Scales and Kenya Scales, three brothers; James, Conrad and Paul Claybrooks and three sisters; Elizabeth Goolsby, Minnie Lee Richardson and Dorothy McNeil. She leaves to cherish and honor her memory: sons; James of Stoneville, NC, Calvin and Michael of Madison, NC, daughters-in-law; pam, Laura and Annette, grandchildren; Toby, Tia, Dwayne, Brent, Mia, great grandchildren; Kaylan, Chase, Elijah, sister; Romona Hart and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
