Douglas Macarthur Hairston, 70, of Madison, NC passed January 15,2022. A public viewing will be held from 1:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. Monday January 24, 2022 at Perry- Spencer Funeral Home, Madison, NC. Graveside service will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 25, 2022 at Sandy Ridge Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Sandy Ridge, NC.
Late Saturday evening January 15, 2022, Douglas McArthur Hairston was preparing for his final flight. He exited from Earth at UNC Hospital Chapel Hill in neurology ICU, while his wife stood by his bedside and watched as he slipped into eternity.
Douglas McArthur Hairston, better known as Doug, was born to the late Paul and Jean Hairston in Madison NC. He was the third of seven, to be born from that blessed union. He received his education from Madison Mayodan Senior High School, where he graduated in 1969. While attending Madison Mayodan he played sports such as football, ran track and he also drove a school bus.
Doug decided to continue his education and attended Barber Scotia College, and ECPI College. From there he was employed with Burlington Industries INC for many years, RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company for years, Macfield where he obtained his CDL License; and lastly, worked for Unifi as truck driver for 35 years which he loved. Doug’s CB handle was “Blue Jay.”
Doug enjoyed watching TV, his favorites were Westerns, Movies, Sports, Nascar, and Drag Racing. This was his down time on Saturdays-Sundays. Doug would always share his opinion on everything he watched.
Doug enjoyed farming and working on his truck and cars. He always talked about how he was going to retire at the end of this month (January 31, 2022).
Doug was a member of Beulah Baptist Church in Madison, NC where he served as a member of the trustee and usher board.
Doug was also a member of Madison Masonic Lodge #563 inn Madison, NC
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Hairston, brothers, Bruce Hairston, and Perry Hairston.
He leaves to cherish his memories: His loving and devoted wife of 46 years, Patricia (Trick) Hairston, daughter, Cemoan Hairston of Winston Salem, NC, son, Craig Pratt of Eden, NC, grandson, Markel Hayes of Winston Salem, NC, grandson, Tarrence Pratt of Eden, NC, granddaughters Keandra Pratt and Mahogany Pratt of Eden, NC, great-granddaughter, Kaliah Millner of Eden, NC.
His memories will also be held dear by siblings Eddie (Althea) Hairston of Madison, NC, Vera (Milton) Martin of Walnut Cove, NC, Cheryl Hairston and Mary Ann Hairston of Madison, NC, Sister-in-laws, Priscilla Hairston of Greensboro, NC, and Lorraine Hairston of Walnut Cove, NC along with 18 nephews and 14 nieces.
Doug was a truly great man and friend.

I met Doug years ago. Doug drove for Unifi and picked up loads from our location in Greensboro. He never met a stranger. He was always talking and smiling and always talked about LIFE and gave me words of wisdom and encouragement. I will miss Doug he reminded me a lot of my dad. Earths loss is Heavens gain.
