God sent his Heavenly Angel down Saturday afternoon, December 5, 2020 to claim one of his own. Mary Evelyn Scales Settle departed her earthly life after an extended illness at Green Valley Memorial Hospital, Greensboro, NC. Mary was born to the late Lucille Scales and Richard Harbor on June 13, 1954. “GrandNew”, as she was so affectionately known to her grandchildren, great grandchildren and so many others in the community, was born in Rockingham County and attended Stoneville High School in Stoneville, NC.
At an early age she joined Burning Bush Holiness Church where she was baptized and accepted Christ as her personal Savior. At the time of her passing she was a faithful member of Grace Baptist Church, Eden, NC. “GrandNew” was a mother, grandmother, great grandmother, “Sister Mother”, “God Mother, special auntie, special friend and most of all, Mary was a true “Community Missionary”. She was here, there and everywhere for anyone that needed her. It did not matter, if it was near or far, if her car couldn’t make it, she would borrow a car to get to you, if you needed her, always with that special love. In all her travels, enjoyments of bingo, sweepstakes and high school sports she never met a stranger. The listening ear, the word of encouragement and the hugs and kisses she always had, will be greatly missed. As a special friend stated, “GrandNew” was a Beautiful Soul and has left a Beautiful Benchmark for us to strive to live a life of Community Service to others as she did. Mary was joined in holy matrimony to the late Willie Roger (Dap) Settle and to this union two daughters was born. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Michael Ben Scales, Sr.
Mary leaves her valued precious memories to: two daughters; Yvonne Bryson (Timmy), High Point, NC, Ella Hairston, Eden, NC, two grandsons; Dominic (DJ) Johnson, Daryl (Pookie) Hairston, Jr, two sisters; Vernette Dalton (Calvin), Margaret Webster, both of Eden, NC two granddaughters; Keyra Johnson, Breona Hairston, five great-grandchildren, Rayne Smith, LaNiya Bowe, Ayden Johnson, Miealeah Johnson, Jahkae Ford, one very special uncle; Jeff Scales, Stoneville, NC, three aunts; Sarah Martin, Eden, NC, Doris Harbor, Eden, NC, Stella Harbor, Winston Salem, NC, three nephews, four nieces, a host of great nieces, nephews, devoted cousins and special friends.
