Obituary For Michael Anthony Wright

Michael Anthony Wright, 29 of Winston Salem, NC passed Sunday, September 24, 2023. Public viewing will be held from 1:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m., Friday, September 29, 2023, at Perry-Spencer Funeral Home, Madison, NC. The family will receive friends Saturday, September 30, 2023, from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at Oak Ridge 1st Baptist Church, 2445 Oak Ridge Road, Oak Ridge, NC with the funeral service beginning at 12 Noon. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Michael, what is in a name? In the Hebrew Michael has two distinct translations as we understand it today. One being “Who is like God?” And “Gift from God.” As Ron and Carol remember Ron Jr would always ask for a brother or sister and God being God answered and gave us Michael. And a gift he has been.

Michael Anthony Wright was born February 1, 1994, to Ronald Anthony Wright and Carol Smith Wright. Michael was born in Wilson, North Carolina and spent his early years growing up in Lucama.

Michael gave his life to Christ at an early age being an active member of Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church of Wilson. Every 3rd Sunday he could be found singing in the Junior Choir and at times leading duets with his older brother. Other Sundays Michael would give God glory by being a founding member of the Ebenezer mime team. At an early age Michael displayed high scholastic and athletic aptitude often making straight A’s and winning and earning multiple football and basketball awards. In 2005 the Wright family moved to the triad area where they were welcomed with open arms by the Oak Ridge First Baptist Church Family. Very quickly Michael was able to form bonds and relationships that will last until the end of time. Michael served as a member of the youth ensemble, the Brother2Brother Ministry, Vacation Bible School plays and in 2008-2009 Michael was asked to be the very first youth Bible Study instructor by Dr. Bobbie Johnson. He volunteered in the Children’s Nursery Ministry and served on the Sound Team Ministry.

Michael had a distinctive ability to make lifelong relationships no matter the stage of life he was in. Starting with Pop-Warner with the Kernersville Raiders, at Walkertown Middle School and East Forsyth whether it was football or track. These relationships are one of the things Michael held sacred.

As he matured and grew so did his desire to get out and do things for himself. Michael fell in love with entrepreneurship. In high school he became a member of the Finance Academy, soon after he joined with close friends and started his first business called “Sons for Hire” and later “Kick Squad” a bespoke sneaker business. Michael carried his passion into everything he did. It has been said everything Michael did, was with a “Spirit of Excellence!” Upon graduation from high school, he was recognized with the following: Incoming first-year student at NC A&T State University, Finance Academy Graduate, Completion of Crosby Scholar Requirements, MVP Track & Field, Recipient of MLK, Jr. Scholarship, All Conference Honors Track & Field and Team Captain Track & Field. Expect an impromptu Jodeci duet with his brother or Midnight Train to Georgia with his mother as one of the Pips.

As Michael entered his college experience, he formed deeper ties with friends that turned into a brotherhood. They sharpened each other as iron sharpens iron. He harnessed his marketing learning’s and leaned into his passion for entrepreneurship forming multiple businesses during his time there including “Sons for Hire” which was lawn care, moving, and handy work business that Michael would either conduct himself or subcontract out to other up and coming entrepreneurs.

Upon graduation, Michael ready to move forward partnered with his brother and sister-in love and formed Legacy Logistics LLC as an equal partner. Michael and the team attained SBE, HUB, and DBE designations from the State. Through God’s favor, Legacy was awarded multiple NC DOT contracts within its first year from the Raleigh Durham area all the way to Asheville and Boone area. Michael’s leadership with the crew and standard for quality work that was instilled in him from his father and mother is what propelled the company to the status it reached within NC DOT.

Due to stoppages caused by the pandemic Michael quickly transitioned and obtained his CDL license and finished his work career as an over the road truck driver.

In his spare time you could always find Michael on the greens playing golf. He could spend hours just enjoying his time with friends on the course. As an avid golfer Michael participated in many tournaments and could not wait to hit the links.

Above all Michael was a child of God and a man that loved his family. If you ever needed anything Michael was there and no one knows that more than his nephews and God daughter. Michael considered it an honor to be chosen to be Hailie Hatton’s Godfather. Unc Mike as he is affectionately known would move heaven and earth to see Tre test for a Tae Kwon Do belt or come watch a football practice. He made sure to establish bonds with them so they would know he would always be there. That is just how he was. Michael loved his folks without limit and with no judgment. His witness and selflessness have done things for the kingdom we may never know until we get there.

Michael is survived by his parents Ronald and Carol; brother and sister-in-love, Ronald Jr. and Hayeon; nephews (Tre) Ronald the 3rd, and Hudson; Grand Mothers, Mattie Wright and Audrey Smith; Uncle, Gregory Smith (Wife Katrina Smith); Aunt, Roz Farmer (Husband Brent Farmer); Uncle, Jeffery Smith (Wife Lisa Smith); Uncle Randy, Aunt Robbin Hinton (Reginald Hinton); Aunt Connie Berry (Brian); God Daughter; Hailie Noel Hatton and a host of cousins and friends. Michael was predeceased by his grandfathers, Robert Wright and Clyde Smith.

Michael was my first chance at having a little brother. I still remember when they brought him home to Lucama after being in the NICU.
