Roy Lee Simmons, 80, of Walnut Cove, NC passed April 24, 2022. Public viewing will be held Friday, April 29, 2022 from 1:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Perry Spencer Funeral Home, Madison, NC. The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, April 30, 2022 with the funeral service beginning at 1:30 p.m. at Baileytown Christian Church, Walnut Cove, NC. Burial will follow in the Bailey Family Cemetery, Walnut Cove, NC.
Mr. Roy Lee Simmons, 80, was born February 6, 1942 to the late Reverend Edward and Mary Simmons. After a brief illness, he departed this life on Sunday, April 24, 2022 at Walnut Cove Health and Rehabilitation Center. During his period of illness, he didn’t complain about his plight.
Roy graduated from London High School in the Stokes County School system. He furthered his education by attending Winston Salem State University. He received his degree in Early Childhood Education. He accepted teaching positions in Dorchester, Pitt. and Rockingham counties before launching a career in the textile industry. He began his business career as a Department Manager with Burlington Industries and assumed a management role with Microfibers until retirement.
Roy was an avid baseball fan and for many years pitched for the Spirits at Ernie Shore Field in Winston Salem, NC until he suffered an eye injury.
At an early age, Roy Lee accepted Christ as his personal Savior, joined Baileytown Christian Church and was baptized by the late Reverend Robinson.
In addition to his parents passing, Roy Lee was preceded in death by his older brother, George Edward Simmons, his younger sister, Barbara Ann Ziglar and his niece, Mona Gumby.
He leaves to cherish his memory: his loving sister; Vernia Simmons, his devoted niece; Phyllis Roopchan (Rajin), great nephews; De’Andre Sims, Christian Roopchan, JR Roopchan, cousins; John, Janet, Carla, Maxine, Shirley, Lisa, Tony, Billy Ray, George, Sandy, Sharon, Karen and Bryant, life-long friends; Dennis and Milton and a host of additional relatives and friends.
Roy was loved by all; he had the biggest heart and the loudest laugh
