My thoughts and prayers are with you family. May God give you strength and peace during this difficult time. Shorty, Melvin loved you and if you didnt know, Shorty loved Melvin. Be encouraged because, we know to be absent from the body is to be present with the lord.
Classmates remember the years we spent together, learning and having fun. Condolences to all the family members.
I have known Melvin since I was 6 years old. Melvin's mama, Mrs Olivia and her children and grand kids were our neighbors. We both lived on a dirt road that led to nowhere. It was called the Teague Farm. We told the time of day by when the freight train that came by our house and made such a noisey existence so all the cows in the pasture would get off the train tracks. Daddy used to hire Melvin and his brother Elvin when he had more chores to do than his time would allow. We especially loved it when daddy had work for Melvin to drive our doon buggy thru the woods . Melvin would drive and my two brothers and I would ride on the back. Our job was to gather wood for daddy to bust up to use in our wood stove to keep warm in the winter. When sticks were too heavy for us to pick up , it was Melvin's job to put those sticks or chunks of wood on the back of the doon buggy.Today, kids don't want to work. They get mad if they have to share the bedroom with another sibling . They don't even want to put out the trash. We had chores before school every morning and again every evening before mama called us to eat supper . We were glad to have a bedroom to sleep in. Once a year, Melvin came to put our homemade mattress's in the sun to air out. Just before nightfall , he would come back , turn the mattress over to the other side and put our mattresses back in the wooden frames. Until we were teenagers , daddy wouldnt let us burn our trash unless Melvin of Elvin came to make sure the fire didnt get out of control. Daddy paid Melvin 25 cents to stay while the trash burned. So in a way , Melvin was like our big brother. It was cooperation that led to us having a telephone in our home. Bell Telephone said if all 3 houses on the dirt road didn't sign up for a phone, then no one would be able to have phone service . So Mrs Olivia agreed to pay for phone servicea d we were finally able to have s phone. It was a joyful time until Melvin met Shortie. You see, the phone was a party line. That meant that only 1 resident on the dirt road could use the phone and all others paying for phone service had to wait till the line was free. Melvin hogged the phone line always talking to Shortie. That man was in love with Shortie. He stayed on the phone holding up the line for hours and hours. So long Melvin. The memories have lasted thru 6 decades and will linger until I am no longer on this earth. With much love and gratitude .... Mary Timlic , Felisha Timlic Short, William Timlic and Vivian Timlic
