Sherrie Kayzee Burgess Hairston, affectionately known as “Kayo” was born September 27, 1954 to James and Mary Burgess.
Kay graduated from Drewry Mason High School in 1972. From an early age, she dreamed of becoming a Registered Nurse, a calling she fulfilled with compassion, dedication, and grace. She graduated from the Danville Regional Medical Center School of Nursing in March 1977 and completed her clinical training at a healthcare facility in Williamsburg, Virginia. Kay devoted 47 years to the nursing profession and retired in 2024, leaving behind a legacy of faithful and compassionate service.
She accepted Christ at an early age and joined Antioch Baptist Church in Ridgeway, Virginia, under the leadership of the late Pastor H.J. Mack. Throughout her life, she remained active in worship and fellowship, sharing her faith with family and friends wherever she went. Kay was united in marriage to Richard Hairston on New Years Eve 1978and to that union two boys were born.
She was preceded in death by her beloved daughter, DeWanda Joy, brother, Markus Dwight, sister, Marian “Mickey” Burgess Wilso, parents, James and Mary Beatrice Burgess; grandparents, William Scales and Mary Parker Scales, John Burgess and Lou Strickland Burgess.
She leaves to cherish her memory: her two sons; Markus (Stephanie) and Chris; three grandchildren, Zaveyae', Makahla and Kailan; her loving nieces, Misty Dodson, Nicole (Jesse) Dillard - her devoted “ride or die” niece and her cousin, Dr. Wayne A. Scales, who shared a special bond with her, lovingly referring to her as the big sister she never had and holding her forever in his heart.
