William Thomas Baines, 79 of Eden, NC passed on Friday, May 2, 2025. The family will receive friends on Monday, May 12, 2025 at Perry Spencer Funeral Home, Eden, NC from 1:30 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. The Memorial Service will beginning at 2:00 p.m. with Military Honors.
William T. Baines or “Book” as he was known departed this life on Friday, May 2, 2025. “Book” was the son of the late Leroy Baines and Beatrice Scales Smith was born on December 24, 1945 in Draper (now Eden, NC). He attended Rockingham County Public Schools and Booker T. Washington High School.
Established employment history, he worked for John Smith Construction Company during his early years. While working at various other jobs, he became an entrepreneur, establishing his own business, West Fork Body Shop. During his pastime he enjoyed the outdoors, he was an excellent marksman, hunter and fishman. He served his country in the U.S. Army and was a Vietnam Veteran.
He was also preceded in death by his sister, Lavern Cole and brother, James Purcell “Tippy”.
Although Book is gone, he will live in our hearts forever. He is survived by sons; Tommy Baines and Terrance Baines of Danville, VA., Travis Baines of Savannah, GA and Anrae Meadows of Eden, NC and a host of grandchildren. One sister; Diane Broadnax of Richmond, VA and six brothers; Edward “Buddy” Purcell (Norman), Micheal Smith all of Eden, NC, Warren “Mack” Purcell of Dallas, TX, Curtiss Purcell (Lottie), Thurman Smith (Beth) all of Reidsville, NC, Jerome Purcell of Greensboro, NC, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.

Even tho Book was Book he had a good heart at times. The sister in law is right vietnam put him in a bad place as many others.

Book was a man's man, meaning that he didn't take nonsense from anyone and would get in your face if he needed to. His sister in law was correct, either he liked you or he didn't. There was no middle ground. I can tell you this though, no one would mess with you if he did like you. We had a lot of good times with him and his family. Rest In Peace Now My Brother.
Im Books sister in law and Book was just Book. He liked you or he didnt. Was just his way. I took him places several times when my husband couldnt. He was always nice to me. Im sure the hardshell come being in the war of vietnam. He asked me one day if i remember the wsr. I said yes i did and he said well it was hard and u just dont want to know what we went through.
