Julia Wanetta Pegues Bivens, affectionately known as “Net”, was born on November 3, 1950, in Marlboro County, South Carolina to the late Mr. Frank and Ona Pegues. Julia departed this life on September 8, 2025 at Cone Health Wesley Long Hospital, Greensboro NC.
On April 3, 1976, Julia married the late Franklin Bivens to whom she remained faithful for 42 years until his death in October 2018. To this union, they were blessed with two wonderful children.
Net accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at a very early age. She was a long-time member of St. Stephen AME Zion Church where she served as the financial secretary for nearly 18-years. She later joined Assembly of Christ Ministries and then Whole Life Community Church before joining Williams Memorial CME Church. She enjoyed serving with the Outreach Ministry Feeding 5000, working with the Willing Workers, and working on special projects as assigned by Rev. Williams. Julia continued serving in these ministries until her health declined.
Net was a graduate of the last class of William Penn High School in 1968. She graduated from North Carolina A&T State University in 1975 with a Bachelor of Science Degree, Business Education. She was also a Licensed Certified Teacher. She held many career positions after graduating and medically retired in 1998. Her positions included Clerk/Typist III (Customer Service) for Burlington Industries (Globe Division), Office Secretary, St. Stephen AME Zion Church, Secretary III, North Carlina A&T State University, Secretary, B&C Associates, Inc., Administrative Sales Assistant, High Point Convention & Visitors Bureau, Convention Services Manager, High Point Convention & Visitors Bureau, Financial Secretary, St. Stephen AME Zion Church. Julia enjoyed spending time with her family and she loved attending the Pegues Newton Family Reunion alongside her husband.
Julia was preceded in death by her husband, Franklin Bivens, parents, Frank & Ona Pegues; grandparents, Odd and Druscilla Covington, Ruthie Covington, Rufus and Minnie Pegues; brother Oscar Douglas Pegues (Janet); sister Gwendolyn Pegues Quick (Thomas); sister-in-law, Sharon Richardson, niece LaTosha Pegues, nephews Tre’Corious Bethea and Tevin Pegues; mother and father in-law, Thomas Bivens and Esther Cash Bivens; brother in laws, Charles Bivens, John Bivens, Archie Bivens, Thomas Bivens Jr., Floyd Conwell, Sr. and many other relatives.
Net leaves to cherish her memories, two children: Felicia Wanetta Bivens of the home and Franklin Donnelle Bivens (Indian Trail, NC); one granddaughter Aliyah Wanetta Bivens (Cary, NC); siblings Artie Pegues, Lithia Springs GA, Rev. Fredrick W. Pegues, Sr. (Rev. Tina), Greensboro NC, Rev. Dr. Alton Pegues (Katrina), Durham NC, Elder Shelby Pegues (Cheryl), Harriet P. Cobbs (Richard), LaVerne Pegues, Clinton MD; Rev. Dr. William F. Pegues (Rev. Dorothy), Greensboro NC; a loving family of in-laws: Allene Huntley (Las Vegas, NV), Lorene Grant (New Haven, CT), Frankie Moore (Douglas), Mae Conwell and Alberta Bivens (Hamlet, NC), James Bivens (Morine) of West Haven, CT; Levander Bivens (New Haven, CT); Burney Bivens (Barbara) of Orange Park, FL; Joseph Bivens (Rosie) of Colorado Springs, CO; Larry (Janet) of Stone Mountain, GA; Nathaniel Bivens (Benita) of Matthews, NC; Christopher Bivens of Georgia; Berta Bivens (Hamlet, NC); Extended family and special friends Rosa Medley, Fannie Lee Tillman, Grady Barbee, Micheal Drummer; Amanda Gibson, Brenda Searcy, and Patricia Randleman and a special cousin Vanessa Kelly (Osmar); and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Funeral service will be held Saturday, September 13, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at Williams Memorial C.M.E. Church. The family will receive friends at the church from 12:30 p.m. until 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Guilford Memorial Park.
Final arrangements are entrusted to Phillips Funeral Service, Inc.
