Obituary For Mr. David Morris Thompson

Mr. David Morris Thompson was a gentle, quiet shield—a Marine, a decorated lawman, and to the family who cherished him most, simply “Superman.” His journey carried him from the sharecropping fields of Fairmont, NC, through the front lines of Vietnam and the streets of Washington, D.C., and back home again. At every stop, he stood as an immovable pillar of protection, calm, and dignity.

​Born to the late Lee and Mildred Thompson, David learned perseverance and responsibility early alongside his siblings, Barbara, Billie, and Dan, and his aunt, Doris Holland, all of whom preceded him in death. He shared a special relationship with his sister, Wanda Evans. In 1965, he graduated from Rosenwald High School and became the first in his family to attend college, studying mathematics at Livingstone College. His studies were paused when he answered the call of duty, serving honorably as a U.S. Marine Corps Corporal and Combat Engineer during the Vietnam War.

​On December 12, 1968, David married his lifelong love, Geraldine DeLois Bullock, beginning a devoted union of nearly sixty years. That same year, he joined the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, D.C. Over a storied 22-year career, he rose from motorcycle officer to Sergeant in Internal Affairs, retiring in 1990 with the widespread respect of his fellow officers.

​After returning home to NC, David continued serving his community as a state Corrections Officer and sharpshooter, worked 21 years in security at American Express, served at the High Point Public Library, and remained a faithful member of New Bethel Baptist Church. In his daily walk, he reflected the unshakable, gentle nature of God’s chosen servant described in Isaiah 42:2–3—a man who never needed to raise his voice in the street to command authority. His was a life held in quiet discipline: powerful enough to face life’s hardest battles, yet gentle enough to protect the vulnerable and shield those he loved.

​David’s greatest devotion was always his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Geraldine; his children, Renee Lewis and Andre Maurice Thompson; his grandchildren, Xavier Lewis, Alexis McFall, Zaria Robbins, and Janielle Albea; ten great-grandchildren; and a host of beloved nieces and nephews who knew him affectionately as “Uncle Mook”.

​He walked through life as an anchor, a protector, and a steady guide. To the world, he was Sergeant Thompson; to his family, he was their living hero—their Superman. Having finished his earthly labors, he now rests in peace, welcomed by the words of Matthew 25:21: “Well done, good and faithful servant; enter into the joy of your Lord.”

Funeral service will be held Friday, September 18, 2026 at 1:00 p.m. at New Bethel Baptist Church, 1116 Montlieu Avenue. Interment will follow at Floral Gardens Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the church from 12:00 p.m. until 1:00 p.m.
