Mr. James Edward Leak, Jr., 59, entered peacefully into eternal rest on Wednesday, October 22, 2025 at his Mom’s residence.
He was born on June 26, 1966, in High Point, NC, to Beverly Michael Mitchell and the late James Edward Leak, Sr. At the early age of 5, he along with his mother relocated to Washington, DC where he matriculated through the DC city schools and attended Cardozo High School. He later received his GED and HVAC Certificate at Vance-Granville Community College, an accomplishment he was extremely proud of completing.
James, who was affectionately known as “Shane,” had a love for basketball and played for various schools in the DC area. Shane had an affinity for all sports and believed himself to be an avid sports commentator. His favorite NFL team was the Washington Commanders aka REDSKINS, and collegiate teams were Penn State and Carolina Tarheels. He was a diehard LeBron James fan and would faithfully watch all the NBA games. Mr. Leak also enjoyed fishing at any opportunity he would have.
Shane was a people person, “likable” guy, who never met a stranger. He lived his life to the fullest and wanted to see others happy. He enjoyed singing (although he couldn’t hold a note). His favorite dance was the two-step which he perfected and often duplicated, ready to perform at any time. He really enjoyed good food; seafood, neckbones, noodles, salads and honey buns were a few of his favorites. Shane took great pleasure fellowshipping with friends and family. His smile was contagious and his boisterous and charismatic personality was extremely infectious. He listened to all genres of music; however, Gerald Levert, Anita Baker, and Lyfe Jennings were a few of his favorites. Shane was so fun to be around!
James worked a plethora of jobs for multiple companies, including, Jessica Charles and Guilford Mills before acquiring his current position in Building and Grounds with Harris Teeter Distribution Center in Greensboro, NC. He was a dedicated employee who was often praised by management, co-workers, family, and friends regarding his outstanding work ethic. He was loved and respected by his co-workers and was diligent right up until his health began to decline. James loved his job!
He was preceded in death by his father, and grandparents.
Those left to cherish his memories are his beloved wife, Reverend Ingenue Nicole McCormick Leak of High Point, NC; mother, Beverly Mitchell of High Point, NC; sons, Demetrius (Patricia) Wigfall of Lawrenceville, Georgia, Jermaine Carrington of Ft. Worth, TX; step-children, Rodney (Anna) McCormick of Raleigh, NC; Stefanee McCormick of High Point, NC, Michelle Proctor of Maryland; half-sister, Clarena Collins Horne; grandchildren, Demetrius Jr., Cameron, JaeQuan, Trinity, Melani, Leah, Ryan, Armani, August, Alahni, Novahni and Samuel; aunts, Joann Michael, Otheta Michael, Anne Currie, Myra (Otis) Devese, Mary Bell, Bernice Horne and Imogene Leak; uncles, Elwood (Frances) Michael, Jerome Michael, Kenneth Michael; mother and father in law, Alfred and Peggy McCormick; sister-in-law, Stephanie McCormick; brothers-in-law, Earnest Dean Melton, and Rodney (Nichica) Melton;and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Funeral service will be held Friday, October 31, 2025 at 12:00 p.m. at Williams Memorial CME Church. Interment will follow at Carolina Biblical Gardens. The family will receive friends at the church from 11:30 a.m. until 12:00 p.m.
Final arrangements are entrusted to Phillips Funeral Service, Inc.
