Obituary For Mr. Joseph Jenkins

Deacon Joseph Jenkins entered peacefully into eternal rest on Friday, July 2, 2021 at his home. He was born on September 17, 1939 to the late Millie Williams Jenkins and Willie “Jim” Chaplin in Bennettsville, South Carolina. Joe was raised by his stepfather, John H. Jenkins, Sr.

Joe attended Marlboro County Schools. He relocated to High Point, NC in 1958. In December 1960 he married the former Rosa Lee Quick. Joe’s employment includes Carolina Springs, First Federal Savings, Monarch Furniture and retired from Thomas Built Buses.

Deacon Jenkins was a devoted member of the Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church. There he served on the Deacon’s Board and was a strong vocalist on the Male Chorus and the Inspirational Choir. A few of the songs most requested was “Jesus Cares”, “I’ve Got Something You Can’t Take Away”, and “God is Able”. His family truly enjoyed listening to him sing at various family gatherings.

Joe loved fishing (especially with his brother, Harry) and watching old western shows. He was known around the neighborhood for having the cleanest cars and the best kept yard. It was an unwritten rule that you did not walk in Joe’s grass. He enjoyed eating good food. It brought him joy especially if his wife, Rosa cooked it. Joe cherished time spent with his family and intentionally treated them to breakfast at least once a year. His children loved riding in his green Pontiac.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Jarvis Perry; a brother, Harry L. Williams; a sister, Ruby Jenkins McLeod; father and mother-in-law; his grandparents.

Those left to cherish her memories are his wife; his daughters, Sharon Robinson (Ronnie), Karen Jenkins, Sheila Jenkins, Pamela Jenkins, and Gloria McCall (Odell); his sons, Kenny Perry and Mark Jenkins; 19 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; sisters, Leila Watson and Rev. Catherine Brown (John); brothers, John Jenkins, Jr. and Charles Jenkins, Sr.; brother-in-law, William McLeod; sister-in-law, Edna Mae Campbell; aunt, Katie McNeil; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Funeral service will be held Friday, July 9, 2021 at 12:30 p.m. at Oak Grove Baptist Church, 1710 E. Green Street. Interment will follow at Carolina Biblical Gardens. The family will receive friends at the church from 12:00 p.m. until 12:30 p.m. Mr. Jenkins may be viewed on Thursday, July 8, 2021 at Phillips Funeral Service Chapel from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.

Final arrangements are entrusted to Phillips Funeral Service, Inc.
