Mr. Roger Heywood McRae passed away peacefully at his home early Friday morning, November 4, 2022. He was born on August 19, 1936, in Belford, NC, the only child of the late Lacy Vernon McRae & Mary Ruth McRae (Hines). Roger was also preceded in death by his son, Joseph H. Dumas, and his daughter, Regina D. Lindsay.
Roger grew up in the Belford area where he was involved in many activities during high school, including basketball, baseball, & football. It was also there that he met the love of his life, Willie Mae Wright. As pre-teens “Rog and Will” began their lifelong love affair. After many years of dating, Roger and Willie embarked on a new journey together as husband and wife raising eight beautiful children together in a loving Christian home.
After High School, armed with an irrepressible spirit, Roger entered the workforce. He loved to drive, and early on found himself on the open road as a long-distance truck driver. However, one of his favorite jobs was traveling up and down the east coast working closely with racehorses. Upon moving to High Point NC, he held various positions in the furniture industry, often working as a forklift operator. Finally, upon retiring, Roger was very content living a peaceful and quiet life surrounded by his family. Family and friends will remember Roger for his sense of style, charismatic personality, and as a playful instigator of fun-filled, hilarious moments.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Willie Mae McRae; his sons, Phillip A. McRae (Luanne), of Yardley, PA. and Haywood M. McRae of Shoreline, WA; his daughters, Laverne D. McRae of Greensboro, NC, Vickie L. McRae of High Point, NC, Shannon S. Cuthbertson (Anthony) of Greensboro, NC, Deveda M. McRae of High Point, NC; an honorary son, Darryl G. Bright of McLeansville, NC; his grandchildren, Dedrica M. McRae-Templeton (Zebulon) of Kernersville, NC, Tangerine Y. Medley of Gaithersburg, MD, Cornelius Dumas of High Point, NC, Zariia M. McRae of Charlotte, NC, Phillip A. McRae, II of Washington, DC, Sheltron D. Fraser of Greensboro, NC, Sheridan M. McRae of Philadelphia, PA, Gavan T. Cuthbertson of Greensboro, NC, and Declan J. Gaskins of High Point, NC; many wonderful great grandchildren, other relatives, and friends; and a long, delightful list of extended family.
Funeral service will be held Saturday, November 19, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at First Emmanuel Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Guil-Rand Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the church from 10:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.
Final arrangements are entrusted to Phillips Funeral Service, Inc.
My prayers and condolences to the McRae Family. Angel Mcbee and Family.
Love you Family. We were heartbroken to hear of Heywood's passing. It has always been a joy to spend time with Heywood and the family when we visited. He truly will be missed. God makes no mistakes; for we know that to be absent from the body is to be present with the LORD. Willie Mae, we know that it is not easy to say Goodbye, for now, to the Love of your Life, but we also know that the LORD has you wrapped in His arms and HE will bring you through the difficult days. We hold the family in prayer. Sending lots of Love. Howard and Shirley Terry
To Willie Mae and all of the children. May God grant you Peace, Strength and Understanding during for now and the days ahead. Haywood was a favorite cousin to all of his cousins. He always had a smile, a chuckle, or a conversation to make you laugh. We will miss him dearly. We love you guys, and praying for you. Sylvia Shannon and all the MvRae Cousins
Hello, Family:
God's Blessings to each of you. Mr. McRae taught many of us how to be responsible citizens. I shall always remember sound advice he gave us to be willing to work and pay for what we want in life. Mr. McRae served First Emmanuel Baptist Church well and enjoyed singing on the choir with his wife and daughter. I taught one of the McRaes lovely daughters and shared this story with her. Mr. McRae was a great man with class and dignity. God Bless All!!! Rev. Bobby W. Green, Jr. and Dr. Gwendolyn Johnson-Green
To my second family; the McRae's. I offer heartfelt condolences and words can not express the sadness I feel in the passing of Mr. McRae. Every time I would stop by to see the family, he always had that awesome smile and welcoming spirit. We would gather around the table and talk and share laughs about someone in the family. Those days and great memories is what you hold dear to the heart for it will keep you going. Mrs. Willie Mae, he loved you and Lord know it showed. To Phil, Laverne, Vickey, Shannon, Maurice, and my sweet baby Divida, God has gained an angel, one that will be missed here on earth but will always remain in your hearts. Know now, no more earthly struggles or pain but rest in our Savior's arms. Darlene McLendon
