Mrs. Betty Jean O’Neil Doster was born June 2, 1952 in Gibson, NC to Harvey Whitaker and Maggie Crawford O’Neil. She transitioned from this life after a brief illness to eternal rest on November 24, 2024 from Beacon Place Hospice Home, Greensboro, NC.
She lived most of her adult life on Camden Street in High Point, NC. For the last four years of her life, she resided at Guil ford House Assisted Living and Memory Care in Greensboro, NC.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband of 52 years, Robert Lee Doster, brothers; Jimmy Lee, Archie, Clarence, John Willie, James, and Lee Prentes; and a sister Lillie Mae O’Neil Brown and sister-in-law, Mary O’Neil.
Betty was a vibrant, outgoing person who loved God and family above all else. She attended High Point City Schools graduating from T. Wingate Andrews High School where she was an active soprano in Mary P. Brown’s Choral Group. They gave rousing performances of Handel’s Messiah for many years after graduation. She later returned to college, first at High Point College (University) and graduated from John Wesley University in High Point, NC. Her great desire was to become a lawyer. However, in firmities of her husband and daughter demanded her time that she devotedly gave to them. As a result, she turned to her loved of children; teaching at High Point Central as a Title 1 Reading Instructor, then transferring to Primary Education instruction. After retirement, she taught as a substitute teacher in elementary schools across High Point for more than 20 years. Principals pleaded with her to join their staffs permanently, but her deep love for her husband and daughter caused her to decline the offers.
Betty leaves to cherish memories a daughter, Robin Renee’ Doster, and brothers, Lindsay, and William Thomas. She also leaves a sister, Vanessa O’Neil Collier (Charles), and a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends.
