Ethel Virginia Hayes Cook Morehead was born June 28, 1934 and took her final journey at Wake Forest Baptist Health High Point Medical Center on January 27, 2020. She was the daughter of the late Rebecca Milling Hayes and Odell Frank Hayes, Sr. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Odell and Abssyina Hayes; one niece, Saundra Manning.
Ethel attended public schools at Florence Junior High School and graduated from Dudley High School in Greensboro, NC. Her final place of employment was with Western Mental Health in Northampton, MA. where she was a supervisor over the Mental Health Ward until her retirement.
She joined Trinity A.M.E. Zion Church as a child, the family Church. After her marriage to Richard Cook, she joined Market Street Seventh Day Adventist Church. She later joined Persimmons Grove A.M.E. Church while married to James Morehead, where she was the Conference Public Relations Coordinator.
Surviving to cherish fond memories are one daughter, Rev. Flaxine Cook Smith; six sons, Gregory (Evelyn) Cook, Frank (Janice) Cook, James Wesley (Pamela) Cook all of High Point, NC, Robert (Imelda) Morehead of Los Angeles, CA, Fuller (Brittany) Morehead and Lacy (Quiana) Morehead all of High Point, NC; one brother, Frank (Ethel) Hayes of Greensboro, NC; three sisters, Georgia Redd of Baltimore, MD, Evelyn Harris and Viteria Jackson of Greensboro, NC; eleven grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren; one special nephew; one special niece; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral service will be held Tuesday, February 4, 2020 at 12:00 p.m. at St. Stephen Metropolitan A.M.E. Zion Church, 1012 Leonard Avenue. Interment will follow at Persimmons Grove A.M.E. Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m.
