Evelyn Long Thompson transitioned to her eternal resting place on January 29, 2021 at Moses Cone Hospital after a brief illness. Born January 26, 1926 in Hickory Grove, South Carolina, Evelyn was the youngest daughter of nine children born to Brooks and Emma Long.
In 1946, Evelyn married James Thompson and moved to High Point, NC. They were married for over 72 years and from that union four children were born: Delores, Barnetta, Warren and Stephanie. Evelyn attended the public schools of York County, and she later graduated from the diploma program at GTCC in High Point, NC.
The Thompsons affiliated with Williams Memorial CME church in 1949. Evelyn was committed to the work of the church and led the Morning Glory Circle teaching the young children of the church. She was also participated in the Senior Choir and the Missionaries Society.
In 1962, James accepted the call into the ministry, and Evelyn was committed to faithfully serve alongside him. She had the honor of serving as first lady at several churches: Thompson Chapel CME, Mt. Zion CME, Youngs Missionary CME, Beebe Memorial CME Church and Shouse Temple CME Church. She was truly devoted to the people where they served and always embraced them with love. She also served diligently in the Ministers Spouses and Stewardess Board. She not only served with her husband, but she served with her daughter, Rev, Delores Mingo, often traveling with her to serve at Montgomery CME and Thompson Chapel CME.
Evelyn was a charter member of the White Rose Chapter of the Eastern Star in High Point and served in her community often volunteering as a sponsor for such organizations as Neighborhood Watch and March of Dimes.
Evelyn Thompson had a strong work ethic and worked for Clarendon Industries and Burlington Industries for over 25 years. After retiring, she also worked at the YMCA and in the Foster Grand Parents program assisting young students for 16 years. She was passionate about helping children learn.
Evelyn exemplified this same passion and enthusiasm with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She had many life lessons that she shared and loved to have fun, teaching them how to read and play games like checkers, bingo, and Uno. She enjoyed family gatherings and working in her flower garden and the vegetable garden. She was widely known for her delicious sweet potato pies. She also loved putting on her Sunday best when going to church, often wearing sassy hats and stylish suits.
Evelyn and James experienced a special love over their 72 years of marriage. They were an inseparable couple who shared many beautiful years of love, laughter and serving God.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James I. Thompson; her daughter, Barnetta Stephens; her son, Warren Thompson, and her granddaughter, Imani Thompson Twine.
