Obituary For Mrs. Letitia Johnson
A life well lived and well loved
Mrs. Letitia B. Johnson 82, of High Point, NC left this life to be with the lord on January 16, 2026. She was born on February 17, 1943, to the late Gladys Beatty Wiley and Adam Hood Beatty. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerome Johnson of 58 years and her sister, Sarah Carter.
Letitia was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She was affectionately known as Tish to both family and friends.
Letitia attended William Penn High School where she played the viola in the orchestra and was the State ping pong champion! She went on to attend and graduate from North Carolina A&T State University Summa Cum Laude (AGGIE PRIDE!) with a BS degree in accounting. She had a 35-year career with the Internal Revenue Service, where she became the first Black woman to become an IRS revenue agent and manager in North Carolina. After she retired, she enjoyed mentoring elementary school students, working in her garden, decorating her home and shopping.
Letitia leaves behind two daughters, Pamela (Eric) Salter of High Point, NC, Rhonda Johnson of Davidson, NC; and her granddaughter, Erika Salter of Charlotte, NC, who will cherish loving memories forever; she leaves behind her forever friend, Penny Chess of High Point, NC who she has known since they were 6 years old; other family members that will miss her include cousins, Jo Ann Covington of High Point, NC, Talmadge Carter of High Point, NC, Bettye Anne (Henry) Jeffries of High Point, NC, Barbara Carter of Lexington, NC, Dr. Ronald Carter of High Point, NC and Dianne Huff of High Point, NC; her brother-in-law, Charles Carter of Las Vegas, NV and nieces, Charita Carter of Los Angeles, CA, Tanya Carter of Portland, OR, and Cheryllynn Carter of Los Angeles, CA; she also leaves behind her brothers and sisters in law who will miss her love and care; Luther Johnson of High Point, NC, Ronald Tyson of High Point, NC, Dr. Gwendolyn (Rev. Bobby) Green of High Point, NC, Doris (Jimmie) Byers of High Point, NC, Debbie Davis of Sneads Ferry, NC Cheryl Tyson and Dr. Henrietta Johnson of High Point, NC; Andrea Gilmer of High Point, NC. Letitia leaves a host of nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held Friday, January 23, 2026 at 1:00 p.m. at Memorial United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends at the church from 12:30 p.m. until 1:00 p.m.
Final arrangements are entrusted to Phillips Funeral Service, Inc.

I was sorry to hear of the passing of your sweet mother when I went to visit on Sunday. I grew attached to her from my visits to Westchester Manor. She and mom had some great conversations, and she is dearly missed. We know she is at peace now and I pray that brings you comfort.

To my nieces, their families, and my family: Tish was a beautiful person inside and out. She was very intelligent and soft spoken. She shared with us her unconditional love. Tish was my cousin, but we loved each other as if we were sisters. From my early childhood until my early teens, I spent Saturday nights with Aunt Gladys, Sarah and Tish. I was always the "little girl" in the room and at some point in time, Tish started calling me "little girl". Even as adults, whenever she called or I called her to talk, she greeted me with "hey little girl" but would end the call with, "okay Barbara Jean, gotta go, I'll talk with you later." She could have a sharp tongue, easily slipping between cleverness and disapproval, to instructive, comforting and encouraging, but her heart was always pure gold, full of love, faith, compassion, and determination. She understood that all lives intersect, and because of those intersections whether purposeful or by chance, for a lifetime or ephemeral, lives change for better or worse. So, she was deliberate, measured, and thoughtful about everything she did and said, and she faced the vicissitudes of life with grace and dignity. Although her moments of clarity progressively diminished, the goodness of her heart did not, and the light and essence of her soul remained bright and strong. Whenever I was about to leave after visiting with her, she never accepted a kiss goodbye on the cheek, it was always a quick kiss on the lips. Tish, the pain of your loss is excruciating, but the pleasure and joy of having had you in our lives will always be with us. I will miss my friend Tish. We worked together for years. She made the world a more beautiful and interesting place. Praying for all of you. I know you have wonderful memories. Peace and love to you all.
