As God extended His loving arms and the gates of Heaven opened on Monday, August 10, 2026, to welcome our beloved mother, Vera Elizabeth Chatman, into paradise, we realized that though we were not ready to let her go, she was ready to rest.
Vera was born on February 21, 1927, in Shelby, NC, to the late Charlie and Thelma White. In addition to her parents, Vera was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Daniel Chatman, Sr.; her son, Daniel Chatman, Jr.; her granddaughter, Tyra Kinsler; and her son-in-law, Bobby Smith.
Vera moved to High Point at a young age, where she became a faithful servant of Greater New Hope Baptist Church for more than 50 years. Moma, as her family affectionately called her, was a devoted usher and served faithfully on the culinary committee.
Moma was a devoted family woman who found joy in the simple and beautiful things in life. She loved baseball, fishing, watching her favorite game shows, visiting the game room, and, most of all, spending time with the family she loved so dearly. Her warm spirit, loving heart, and unwavering dedication to her family created countless memories that will be treasured forever.
Vera was employed at Fli Back and Green Street Baptist Church before retiring. Throughout her life, she demonstrated a strong work ethic, unwavering kindness, and a deep commitment to everyone around here.
Vera leaves to cherish her precious memories her loving children: three daughters, Carrie Smith, Geraldine Crawford, and Ginger Davis; and one son, Robert Chatman; she also leaves one grandson whom she raised, Tokota (Patricia) Waden, and a special great-granddaughter, Patrice Waden; she also leaves behind a host of cherished grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, other relatives, and many dear friends who will forever hold close the beautiful memories they shared with her.
Vera's life was a true testament to love, family, strength, faith, and dedication. She deeply touched the lives of everyone blessed to know and love her. Though she is no longer with us in body, her love, wisdom, laughter, and legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of her family and all who knew her.
Rest peacefully, Moma.
Your love will forever remain a part of us, and your memory will never be forgotten. You may be gone from our sight, but you will forever remain in our hearts.
Funeral service will be held Tuesday, August 18, 22026 at 1:00 p.m. at Greater New Hope Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Carolina Biblical Gardens. The family will receive friends at the church from 12:30 p.m. until 1:00 p.m.
Final arrangements are entrusted to Phillips Funeral Service, Inc.
