Obituary For Teresa "Sugar" Evans

Jubilation reigned on the day of October 15, 1948, with the birth of Teresa Evans “Sugar” to her parents, Emmery and Eunice Evans on Tuesday, April 14, 2026. Teresa triumphed as she courageously won her battle with prolonged declining health as her soul soared triumphantly to its heavenly home. She was preceded in death by her parents, older brother, Emmery Jr.; older son, Terrence Richardson; her partner in life, Keith Tyson, Sr., and Ada Mae, a very dear friend.

Possessing a quiet and gentle demeanor yet a lively spirit, humor, embracing children, nurturing meaningful relationships with long-time friends over many years with love and loyalty, she thrived with prayer. Graciously hospitable, she opened her home to all with appreciation that her visitors had graced her with their presence. She loved to cook and did it very well; especially holiday feast for the family-a tradition of skills and recipes handed down from her mother.

Growing up in the local community, she knew many in the personal and working communities and maintained an awareness and connection, remembering many from many years ago with positive thoughts.

Education efforts include starting with attending Christ the King Catholic School, graduating from William Penn High School in 1966, Atlantic Business School in Washington, DC, and graduating from Shaw University in Raleigh, NC. These efforts directed her to working at the Treasury Department in Washington, DC, U.S. Post Office in Greensboro, NC, offices of health businesses and finally retiring from Bethany Medical Center as financial processor of insurance records. In the early years, she lived in Washington, DC and California before returning to North Carolina.

Teresa’s family and friends, which include her wonderful neighbors were the love of her life and she constantly prayed for them. She leaves to celebrate her life and to embrace her memory with prayer and loving thoughts: her son, Keith Tyson (Ashley) and their children; other grandchildren and great grandchildren locally and in North Carolina and California; brother, Angelo Evans (Anoka); sister, Justine Garlington (Cecil); endearing nieces, cousins and friends locally, North Carolina, Maryland, New Jersey, California and Louisiana.

The family is overwhelmingly indebted to long-time friends who remained ever-present in helping to meet the challenges in her life: KeDra, Angel, Natasha, Jackie, Vanessa, Renee, Barbara Ann, Ann and Randy, Corey and Gina.

Funeral service will be held Friday, April 24, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at Christ The King Church. The family will receive friends at the church from 10:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.

Final arrangements are entrusted to Phillips Funeral Service, Inc.

To my extended family, Sugar was an Aunt to me and Best Friend to my mom Ada Mae Walker. Sugar and Ada Mae talked or sat on the phone listening to each other breathe for hours everyday. Enjoying each others company. The day Ada Mae transitioned, Sugar said KeDra I dont know what I'm going to do without my buddy. I told her, we got this, because she told us "God Got Her"! Charles also told her, I will talk to you everyday just like my wife did... He did just that even on the day she transitioned to meet her Best Friend Ada Mae. Sugar's voice tried to mask distress but you could tell she was struggling. My heart was hurt with this double whammy (Ada Mae/Sugar). But this... this felt different. This wasn't something I could think my way through—it was something I felt. Something in my spirit led me to this realization while I was at the house with Sugar. A quiet knowing settled over me, one I can't fully explain. During my mom's 34 days in the hospital, my mom showed consistency, incredible strength and resilience. In her testimony, she spoke about the deep connection she shared with her best friend, Sugar Looking back now, it feels like she was preparing us—like she somehow knew. Almost as if she was forewarning us that they would be reunited. And then, 34 days later... they were.

Sugar grieved deeply, the kind of love that runs so deep it affects the heart in every way. Their bond was real, powerful, and unbreakable—even beyond this life. This experience has shown me that some connections don't end here. They transcend time, space, and understanding. And there is peace in knowing they are together again. 🤍. They rise above time, space, and our understanding.

And in that, there is peace.

Peace in knowing this was not coincidence.

Peace in knowing they are together again. 🤍

We love you Sugar and will miss you. We have "No Worries, God Got Both of You". I'm at Peace. Reggie, Justine, grandkids and family please be encouraged and realize God is in control and he will strengthen you all through this difficult time. I love you all. KeDra Rogers & Walker Family

My sincerest condolences to the Evans family, on behalf of Teresa "Sugar" Evans. I am deeply sorry for your loss. I met Teresa many years ago when I was an instructor at Shaw University and she was a student. I was very impressed with her determination to acquire her degree. She studied hard, reached her goal and achieved her degree. She had a beautiful personality and a kind spirit. We both had a good laugh when we found out much later that we were neighbors, just a few houses down from each other. I pray the family will find peace and comfort in the arms of Jesus.
