Obituary For Mrs. Johnnie Mae Hooten

Johnnie Mae Hooten was born on March 22, 1942 in Montgomery, Alabama to the late Mary E. Taylor and Willie Lewis. She was raised by her maternal grandparents, Robert and Johnnie Mae Harris in Montgomery, Alabama. Johnnie Mae transitioned this life on June 27, 2020, leaving a legacy of love, friendship and laughter. Johnnie Mae was united in holy matrimony with Joe Louis Hooten on February 6, 1963 in Montgomery, Alabama. Their union was blessed with two children, Tyrone and Deidre. Johnnie Mae received her Master of Education Degree from Alabama State University in 1971. She was a passionate special education teacher. She taught in Alabama and various counties throughout Georgia, to include Harris, Randolph, and Muscogee. Her love of teaching was not confined to her special education students, Johnnie Mae was also passionate about ceramics. She shared her excitement and experience in the classes she taught at the Salvation Army in Marietta.

Always very active, Johnnie Mae loved her road trips around the Gulf Coast, and she was renowned for exhibiting and selling her unique ceramic creations at sorority and fraternity national conventions. On any given Saturday or Sunday Johnnie Mae would be found cheering on her favorite college and pro football teams and providing insightful commentary. She had a special love for the Alabama Crimson Tide. While living in Marietta, Georgia, Johnnie Mae was an active member of Saint Thomas The Apostle Catholic Church. She is preceded in death by her parents, Mary E. Taylor and Willie Lewis, her maternal grandparents, Robert and Johnnie Mae Harris, her husband, Joe Louis Hooten, and her brother, Joe Louis Pickett, Sr. She leaves to cherish her memory: one son, Tyrone Hooten, one daughter, Deidre Brown, one adopted son, Thomas Jones (Laurell); three grandchildren, Jasmine Locklin, Rickey Brown Jr., Madison Brown; and a host of other relatives and friends.
