RIP Cousin You will truly be missed. I will always love you.

Michelle Charles

My brother was always very protective of his siblings. In his teens, he was a huge fan and practitioner of various martial arts, which he learned from our next-door neighbors who had spent extensive time throughout Asia and learned karate, taekwondo, jiu-jitsu, and several other martial arts along the way. When I was about 7 or 8 years old, my brother started training me in some of those same skills. Most notably, he taught me how I could overpower and "flip" a person two to three times my size by using simple physics. He made me practice: he would suddenly run toward me from the front, from the side, or from behind. My job was to respond immediately and flip him over onto his back on the ground. The training proved successful later.

A few months later, while at a summer day camp at my elementary school, a 12-13-year-old boy who had taken a liking to my older sister 'Buttons' began behaving poorly after she made it clear she had absolutely no interest in him beyond casual and cordial interactions. As is common for boys of that age who face rejection, he began pestering and attempting to bully her. I observed the young man making threats and, eventually, getting ready to put his hands on my sister. He immediately found himself flipped over onto his back, making a HARD landing on the asphalt despite being easily twice my size. My brother's training had worked. What resulted was several other boys pointing, mocking, and laughing at the young man in disgrace, and, to the best of my knowledge, that young man never dared to bother my older sister again. Later that evening, Kelly could not stop smiling and glowing with PRIDE that I had wisely used the very skills he had taught me. "That's how the Andrews do it", he told me.

My other big memory took place in the 1980s. Before cell phones and the internet, almost every house had a single landline. Before there was caller ID, OUR home had the "Kelly phone screening system." It worked as follows: If my parents were not home and the phone rang, and ANY of his siblings picked it up and started talking to the caller, Kelly would immediately snatch the phone out of our hands and interrupt with a very abrupt, "WHO DIS? And why are you calling here? Who are you?" He would proceed to interrogate the caller with a series of questions, which, if answered unsatisfactorily, resulted in an abrupt phone hang-up. Unknown people calling our house and speaking with his siblings simply was not permitted. He was always "on the job" 24/7, attempting to defend his family from potential threats, "unsavory characters," bad actors, and intruders.

I love you, big bro. Thanks for teaching me how to defend myself and my family and for being the "guardian" over you siblings as we were growing up.

Thanking God for the life of my brother who was humble and peaceful always when I called. We would be on that phone talking about old times and laughing about some of the crazy stuff we did together. My brother was funny at times and had this crazy laugh that made me laugh instantly. He still has the ability to make me laugh and smile within when I think on these fonds memories. Love you little brothers. You will forever be remembered and celebrated.
