Mr. Cornelius “Neil” Maryland, Sr., a resident of Montgomery, AL, transitioned September 19, 2026. Memorial Service will be Saturday, October 3, 2026, from Ross-Clayton Funeral Home Chapel at 11:00 A.M.
Cornelius “Neil” Maryland, Sr. was born on April 6, 1961, at Nouasseur Air Base near Casablanca, Morocco, to United States Air Force Airman Willie Maryland and Jannie Faulkes Maryland. He was the seventh of eight children born to their union.
On Saturday, September 19, 2026, Neil departed this life after a brief illness.
Neil was educated in Montgomery, Alabama, and graduated from Sidney Lanier High School in 1980. Possessing a natural aptitude for mathematics and an enduring appreciation for education, he continued his studies at Alabama State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics in 1984.
He began his career with the Alabama Department of Public Health in 1985, serving there until 1987. He then joined the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, where he worked from 1987 until 2005. In 2005, Neil returned to the Alabama Department of Public Health, continuing his service until his retirement in 2021.
Neil leaves to cherish his memory his beloved children, Cornelius “CJ” Maryland and Affton Maryland; his godson, Cortez Dallas; his special mentee, Quentin Lewis; and his beloved companion, Vonda Reeves. He also leaves his faithful fur baby, Apollo, the schnauzer.
His surviving siblings are Willie (Susan) Maryland of Racine, Wisconsin; Deloris Maryland (John) Adams of Alabaster, Alabama; Josephine Maryland Perry of Montgomery, Alabama; Laura Maryland (Derius) Page of Montgomery, Alabama; and Kimberly Maryland (Terrence) Sims of Birmingham, Alabama.
He also leaves his brother-in-law, Samuel Tekyi-Mensah of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, along with a host of cherished nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, colleagues, mentees, and friends.
Neil was preceded in death by his parents, Willie Maryland and Jannie Faulkes Maryland; his sisters, Jearlean Maryland Ellis, Patricia Maryland Tekyi-Mensah, and Debra Maryland-Simpkins; his brothers-in-law, Lewis Stoudmire, William Wiley, and Edward Simpkins.
