Obituary For Mrs. Mary B. Bullard

Mary Boykin Bullard entered into eternal rest on October 3, 2026.

She was interred in a private graveside service on October 8, 2026.Mrs. Bullard was the first born of three children to loving parents, Estell and Minnie (Rodgers) Boykin, on October 24, 1933. She grew up in Bullock County Alabama attending Mount Hilliard Baptist Church.

Mrs. Bullard’s early years included the Bullock County school system where she graduated valedictorian of her high school class. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Alabama State University, graduating magna cum laude in 1955; earned a Master of Science Degree at Troy State University in 1973 and earned her 6th year AA Certification at Troy State University in 1975. In 1977, in cooperation with the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, Mrs. Bullard traveled to West Africa, as part of the Consortium for Strengthening Intercultural Understanding, contributing to a book on West African cultures.

Her career began in 1955 with the Montgomery County Board of Education until she retired in 1996. During her 41 years of service, she held numerous positions: teacher, administrative assistant, principal, and supervisor of instruction. She also served as an adjunct instructor in the Department of Education at her alma mater, the beloved ASU. It is noteworthy that Mrs. Bullard and her dear friend, the late Edna D. Franklin, two pioneer teachers, integrated Bear Elementary School in 1968.

A lifelong commitment to service defined Mrs. Bullard’s life. She gave her time and talents serving numerous organizations during her career and during her retirement including: Laubach Literacy, National Association of Parliamentarians, Capitol City Parliamentarians Unit, Capitol City Master Gardner Association, Council for School Administrators and Supervisors, International Platform Association, Ten Times One Is Ten Federated Club, Southeastern Association of Colored Women’s Clubs, Inc. and Youth Affiliates, Alabama Association of Colored Women’s Clubs, Inc. and Youth Affiliates, Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society, Alabama Education Association, Montgomery County Education Association, National Education Association, Montgomery Symphony League and the National Trust for Historic Preservation to name a few. She enjoyed helping people and touched countless lives leaving a legacy of kindness that will be long remembered.

Mrs. Bullard is preceded in death by her brother, Samuel Boykin and son-in-law, Radford Harville. She is survived by her loving daughter, Bernadette Harville; sister, Myrtle Boykin, and a host of family and friends.
