Full Obituary
Ms. Cherry Owens, a daughter, nurturer, teacher, and friend, was born to the late Mr. Roman Owens and the late Ms. Lee Ella Owens at St. Jude Hospital in Montgomery, Alabama, on March 15, 1971. A woman of deep faith, Cherry joined Eastmont Baptist Church through baptism on August 18, 2018, in Montgomery, Alabama.
She was raised in Letohatchee, AL and received her early education in the public schools of Montgomery County and continued her studies to earn both a bachelor’s degree and advanced graduate degrees. She was certified to teach elementary education and held certification as a reading specialist. Her career in education spanned more than two decades in Macon County Public Schools, where she was adored by her students and respected by colleagues. Throughout her tenure, she served in various leadership roles, including team leader, grade-level chair, and Teacher of the Year. In 2018, Cherry retired early to focus on her health.
At home, Cherry found great joy in watching HGTV, working on home projects, and collecting dolls. She especially treasured time spent with her godson, Ryan Cook. Rev. Johnny Brundidge was her go-to person for bringing her creative visions to life, helping turn her ideas into reality around the home.
Cherry is remembered and survived by her adopted son, Devonte Quincy Owens (Montgomery, AL); five sisters: Elaine (Jessie) McMeans (Greenville, AL), Gloria Jean Powell (Akron, OH), Joyce Peterson (Greenville, AL), Mary Ann Ivory (Montgomery, AL), and Lexie Owens (Hayneville, AL); four brothers: Charles Wright Cook (Chicago, IL), Marvin Taylor (Montgomery, AL), Sidney Owens (Karen) of Montgomery, AL, and John Powell (Akron, OH); along with a host of extended family members including her nieces and nephews. Her brother, Joe Frank Knight preceded her in death.
Cherry was blessed to have two mentors, Ms. Gaynell Brown and Ms. Donna Harper, who were instrumental in supporting Cherry throughout her life. Many close friends and co-workers join her family in honoring her memory and legacy.
Cherry designated her friends and former co-workers—Ms. Annie E. Lewis, Dr. Dorothy E. McDonald, and Dr. Jacqueline A. Brooks—to facilitate her final arrangements.
