Ms. Gloria Pontedia Cooley, the youngest of seven children born to the late Frankie Armstead Cooley and William Edward Cooley Sr. transitioned to her eternal home on Friday, June 21, 2019.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, June 29, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. from Old Ship AMEZ Church, 483 Holcombe Street, Montgomery, AL.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth Montine Cooley Woods, and three brothers, William Edward Cooley Jr., Frank Alvin Cooley, and Fletcher Earl Cooley.
Gloria was born in Montgomery, Alabama. Gloria attended first and second grades at Saint Jude Elementary School, third through ninth grades at Loveless School. tenth through twelfth grades at Alabama State Laboratory High School. Gloria earned a bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education at Alabama State University and a Master of Science degree at Alabama A&M University. She began her career as a media specialist at Troy Elementary School, Troy, Alabama. She returned to Montgomery and continued her career as a Library Media Specialist at Carver Elementary School. Gloria worked part-time at Walmart and was a dedicated and loyal volunteer at Jackson Hospital where she received recognition for outstanding service. Gloria was a lifelong, dedicated member of Old Ship AME Zion Church.
She was a member of several organizations and clubs which include: Alabama Education Association, Montgomery County Education Association, National Education Association, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Cliques Social Club, the Women's Home and Oversea Missionary Society of AME Zion Church, Pokeno Club and Birthday Club. Left to cherish Gloria's memory are her brothers, Nash (Jessie) Cooley and Carl (Doris) Cooley of Montgomery, AL; nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren and a host of other relatives and devoted friends including Benjamin Gray, Jacqueline Elzie, and Melody Collier. In lieu of flowers, monetary memorials may be given to Old Ship A.M.E. Zion Church, 483 Holcombe Street, Montgomery, AL 36104.
