Obituary For Anne Ateman

On May 5, 1941, Ollie and Mattie Suttles were blessed by the birth of their only child, whom they named Anne Elizabeth.

Anne was brought up in a Christian home with Collins Chapel CME Church being her religious foundation. She remained at Collins Chapel until late in life when she joined her husband at his home church, Metropolitan Baptist Church, under the leadership of Dr. Reginald Porter, Sr. She became active at Metropolitan by becoming an active member of the Adult Sunday School, the Deacons and Trustees’ Wives and the Rebecca Club.

Anne was educated in Memphis City Schools, graduating in 1959, from Melrose High School. She furthered her education at Lane College where she received her BA in Music. Anne loved to play the piano and she was very accomplished as a pianist. Early in her life, she was tutored by Professor John Whitaker, and she never failed to share her talents with whomever and whenever she could.

After graduation from Lane College, Anne began employment at the United States Post Office, the Internal Revenue Service and the Department of Human Services.

During her short time at the Post Office, she accepted a ride from a co-worker who offered to take her home. This young man, being smooth as silk, convinced Anne that he was just giving her a ride, but about four months later, April 25, 1966, Anne Suttles agreed to spend the next 59½ years with him as husband and wife. Their marriage was a true love story with them traveling the globe together. Some of her favorite places were the Grand Canyon, the Colorado Mountains, Las Vegas, Biloxi, Reno and any other place that they could be together.

Anne Ateman lived a full, loving, God-fearing life. She leaves to celebrate her life and cherish her memory her loving and devoted husband, Henry; her sister-in-law, Gloria Ateman; cousins, Cora Reid, Marilyn Taylor, Maggie Jackson, Josephine Jones, Sylvia Graham and Michelle Hodges; niece, Alida Johnson; nephew, Allen Ateman; god-children and friends.

Memorial service will be held Saturday, October 4, 2025 at Metropolitan Baptist Church 767 Walker Ave, Memphis, TN

Send flowers to the service of Anne Ateman
