Obituary For Audrey Brooks

Audrey Applewhite Brooks was born on November 24, 1948, in Memphis, Tennessee, to the late William and Majora Applewhite. From an early age, Audrey embraced her faith, giving her life to Christ and being baptized at Keel Avenue Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Curtis Price at the age of 14. Her spiritual journey continued as she became a devoted member of Bellevue Baptist Church and later joined Praise of Zion under the late Rev. B.C. Brooks, where she faithfully served in various roles for over a decade.

Audrey graduated from Manassas High School in 1966 and continued her education at State Tech Institute.

On May 2, 1970, Audrey was united in holy matrimony with Walter L. Brooks. Their loving union was blessed with two daughters, LaToya and Tiffany, who were the pride and joy of her life.

Audrey began her professional journey at Unclaimed Cleaning Exchange and went on to work at RCA, Whittaker Textiles, and ITT Continental Baking Co. Her most enduring career was with United Way of the Mid-South, where she dedicated over 40 years of service. There, she built a remarkable work family and fostered a culture of care and camaraderie.

Known for her generosity, wit, and radiant spirit, Audrey had a unique gift for turning ordinary moments into cherished memories. She was the heartbeat of her family—always informed, always involved, and always ready with a “question for you.” Her devotion to family and friends was unwavering, and she took immense pride in being the rock of the Applewhite family. She instilled in her children the values of generosity, loyalty, and the importance of being present for loved ones.

Audrey was affectionately known by many names—none of which she chose, but all of which she embraced with laughter and love. Her vibrant personality and joyful presence left an indelible mark on everyone she encountered.

Whether stepping in for her late siblings, celebrating birthdays and holidays in her special way, serving as a surrogate grandmother, or simply offering her time, wisdom, and support, Audrey was always there. Her legacy is one of love, strength, and selfless service.

On September 19, 2025, at Northside Hospital, Audrey departed this life.

She was preceded in death by her father, William, her mother, Majora, three sisters, five brothers, and her beloved husband, Walter L. Brooks, whom we take comfort in knowing welcomed her with open arms.

To mourn her passing she leaves two devoted daughters, LaToya Brooks and Tiffany Brooks of Atlanta, GA, five sisters-in-law: Arlee Applewhite, Sam Etta Bland, Shirlene Brooks, Mary Alice Brooks, Rose Brooks of Memphis, TN and three brothers-in-law: Loucious Wadlington of St. Louis, MO, Leonard (Estelle) and L.B. Brooks (Brenda) of Memphis, TN, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren and friends.

“In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak

and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said,

“It is more blessed to give than to receive.” Acts 20:35
