Bernice Phillips Hubbard, 79, was born on February 2, 1942, to the late Willie Alton Pierce, Sr. and Lue Easter Dorothula Pierce in Oakland, Tennessee. She was a devoted mother, and a true example of God’s love to everyone that she met along her life’s journey.
She accepted Christ at an early age, and represented Him faithfully in word and deed. Many have shared testimonies of how their encounters with her compelled them to follow Jesus! With a spirit of excellence, she faithfully served Apostle Kevin Davidson & The Dominion Church as a Church Mother, Sunday School Superintendent, and Coordinator of the Pastor & Wife Love Day celebration.
God anointed her to sing as a young child, and she LOVED to glorify Him in song! She will be most remembered for her rendition of the Gospel standards, “Life is Just One Step,” “Only What You Do for Christ will Last,” and other treasured songs of the church. She was a member of the Heavenly Express, where her voice stirred audiences in praise! In 2014, she was featured on the “Something Happens” album by Apostle Kevin Davidson and the UCICC Fellowship Choir, as a lead vocalist on “Thank You Jesus” and “Church Let’s Rock”. She also worked with such Gospel legends as Gloster Williams, the late Maestro Decatur Williams, and a host of others. Throughout her life, God used her gifts to bless the hearts of many. As a seamstress, she created her own patterns and created beautiful garments. Her striking beauty led her to an opportunity to serve as a model for Lustrasilk. Because of her love for cooking, she embarked on an entrepreneurial venture and opened Bonnie’s Riverboat Barbecue, where she served food and led many of her customers to Christ! She worked for many years as a Financial Secretary for Memphis City Schools, and retired on April 29, 2008 after 40 years of service. For her outstanding Christian service, she was honored in 2015 by House of Hope, led by Matthew Mitchell, as a Breast Cancer Survivor and by Church Girls Rock, led by Marcus Malone, in 2016. She was also recognized as a faithful volunteer for Tall Trees/CCA Shelby Training Center in 2004.
She answered God’s divine call on Wednesday, April 14, 2021, at 10:52 p.m. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Earnest “Pop” Hubbard; & five siblings: Jernice Pierce, Raymond Pierce, James Pierce, Dexter Pierce and Willie Alton Pierce, Jr.
To cherish her memory, she leaves five children: Kenneth (Jennifer), Gerald (Kathaleen), Connie (Marcus), Phelisha (Paul), and Cheryl (Derrick); one sister, Lennie Mae Holloway (Ron); two brothers: Charles Ray Pierce (Betty) and Joseph Pierce (Annie); Bishop Terrell Thompson and Lady Rennie Thompson (who she loved as her very own); 21 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and dear friends.
The family will receive friends from 5:00PM to 7:00 PM on Friday, April 23, 2021 at Dominion Baptist (794 E. Raines Rd. Memphis, TN 38116). Homegoing celebration will be Saturday April 24, 2021 at 11:00 AM., Oak Grove MB Church (HYW. 64 Bartlett, Tennessee) . Interment will follow in Memphis Memory Garden Cemetery, 6444 Raleigh Lagrange Rd. Memphis TN 38134.
