At an early age, Corey professed his faith in Christ and was baptized at Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Wardell Johnson. Later in life, he became a faithful member of Brown Missionary Baptist Church, where he served faithfully on the Parking Lot Ministry.
Corey married the love of his life Melanie Worthy in 1999 and to their union was born his beloved son, Carter Nelson, whom he cherished.
Corey was born May 10, 1970, in Memphis TN. He was the second of three children born to the union of Bennie and Lelia Nelson. Corey was the baby brother to Cedric and a loving big brother to Heather.
Corey was a proud graduate of the 1989 Class of Raleigh Egypt High School. He received his B.A. of Science in Sociology from Tennessee State University and a Master of Science in Human Resource from Webster University. Corey’s spiritual gift from God was “serving”. He displayed service daily through his profession as a social worker where he worked dutifully at the Shelby County Health Department. Corey was a beloved co-worker, a strong family man, a lover of life, and a friend to all. Corey never met a stranger and was loved by many near and far. Corey was a dedicated husband, adoring father, and affectionate uncle and friend. Corey was a devoted Dallas Cowboy fan and supported both Raleigh Egypt High School and Tennessee State University until his death. Corey leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Melanie Nelson, and son, Carter Nelson; parents, Bennie and Lelia Nelson; loving siblings, Cedric (Renee) Nelson, Heather (Daniel) Heaston; nieces and nephews, Cameron (Portia) Nelson, Dylan Heaston, Hannah Heaston, Cortney Nelson, and Camryn Nelson along with a host of beloved aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Sending words of comfort to your family. Dorothy James
Words cannot express the feelings I've had these last few days of how this has made me feel. You always think you have one more day, but in reality, you never know. I didn't get the chance to tell or call to tell him " I love you" or to say "you will always be my brother in law " . But you knew it went without saying. You will be truly missed.
Please accept our sincere condolences. We are so sorry for your loss. We both had the honor and privilege to work with Corey for many years and truly experience his gift of acceptance, support, and guidance that he gave so easily for all those in his care. His smiles and laugh were healing in itself. We also had the honor and privilege to know him as friend. May his memory be etched in your hearts abs minds forever and may God comfort you all. Sincerely- Jeff and Julia Lowrey.
Melanie and Carter our condolences and prayers are with you. From Laticia, Deronique, and Family of Charmaine. May god bless you!
We lost a real one. Corey was more than a good friend of mine, he was family. His infectious spirit was something I admired and will truly miss. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. Desmond McKinney
Melanie and Carter, We are so sad to hear of Corey's passing. His smile, his joking spirit, his care for others, and the love he had for his family are the traits that will always be remembered when we think of Corey. He would light up every room he entered. Know that we are praying for y'all and looking forward to the day we see him again.
May God continue to cover the Nelson family in the great loss. Rod Mitchell and Family
