Jimmy Lee Morgan was born in Memphis, Tennessee on December 27, 1952, to his parents, Mr. Columbus London and Mrs. Addie B. Morgan. A relatively quiet child, he grew up in a loving home with seven older brothers and a sister. This tight-knit bunch was reared by their mother, along with their grandmother, Mrs. Viola Hicks.
As one of the larger families on Broad Avenue, the Morgan family was well known throughout the Binghampton community and in their local church, First Baptist Broad. This is where Jimmy first confessed his hope in Christ and accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior. Affectionately called “Ricky” by family and friends, he was a product of the Memphis City School System, where he was a proud graduate of Lester High School. After graduation, he furthered his education at Tennessee State University, where he played trombone in the marching band.
After his time at Tennessee State, Ricky’s life journey brought him back home, and he enlisted in the United States Navy. Much like his father, he never met a stranger. Even in his latter years, he loved to share stories of his adventures while serving his country. After serving two terms in the Navy, once again, he returned to Memphis and was employed at Sears and at Schering-Plough. Besides his musical talents, military service, and employment, Jimmy was also gifted in poetry and the spoken word.
Jimmy had a unique gift of love which was displayed in his big smile, easy-going demeanor, and friendly personality. His caring nature was further demonstrated in the fact that he served as one of the caregivers for both his mother and his father in their latter years. Even during his lengthy illness, when speaking with his siblings, in spite of his own pain and discomfort, he was known to often ask about the well-being and endeavors of his nieces and nephews. That is love.
On the morning of April 14, 2025, Jimmy Lee “Ricky” Morgan transitioned peacefully into paradise. He was preceded in death by his mother; his father; siblings, Ella Mae Jennings, James Morgan, Sr., Willie Morgan, Robert Morgan, Johnnie Morgan, A. D. Morgan, James Charles Morgan, Willie Mathis, and James London.
Jimmy leaves to cherish his memory and to bear witness to his record, one son, Devin Morgan; seven loving siblings, Mae Ola Hall (Sidney), Russell London, Columbus D. London, Frances Sharp, Carolyn Lyons (Iceola), Joyce Haywood (Christopher), and Jackie Harris; as well as a large host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends.
