Obituary For Levon Bishop

Levon Manuel Bishop was born on May 14, 1946 in Memphis, Tennessee to the union of Rev. John Thomas (J.T.) and Malinda Rome Bishop. Both preceded him in death.

Levon, the fifth of six children, attended Hyde Park Elementary and graduated from Douglass High School in 1964. After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served as a weapons specialist during the Vietnam War. After service, he attended Compton County Community College and worked as an aircraft parts machinist. Levon went on to have a 30-year career with the U.S. Postal Service. In retirement, he relished his role as the family pitmaster where made his own sauces and hosted barbeque dinners at his home. He was a Mason, a member of the Douglass High School Alumni Association, and a fan of the Tennessee Titans.

Levon professed his faith at an early age at Greater Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church under the spiritual guidance of Reverend E.V. McGhee. He recently served as an usher at Hunter Avenue Baptist Church where he was a member at the time of his passing.

Family was always Levon’s primary priority. He had immense pride in his children Quinest D. Bishop, Sr. (Heather) of Sharpsburg, GA and Ashley D. Donerson (Jeremy) of Nashville, TN. However, it was his beloved grandchildren, Quinest Bishop ll, Haley Bishop, Davis Bishop, Titan Bishop, Jeremy Donerson, Addison Donerson and Josiah Donerson, that brought him abundant joy.

He leaves to cherish his memory his two children, seven grandchilden, sister, Dorothy M. Burton of Memphis, TN, and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Leneva “Lynn” Taylor, Evelena Grant, John T. Bishop “Junior”, Thelma “Patsy” Duvall, and Patricia Ann Brown.

Levon will be remembered as being a family man, a faithful friend, and one whom enjoyed a good party and expressed his love with both words and action. He will be greatly missed.

The family receive friends Tuesday, May 21, 2024 from 4:00pm-6:00pm at RS Lewis & Sons 2944 Walnut Grove Road, Memphis, TN 38111. Celebration of Life will be Wednesday, May 22, 2024 12:00noon at Greater Mt Zion 2070 Chelsea Ave, Memphis, TN 38108
