Obituary For Steve Webster

Steven R. Webster was a marvelous soul whose personality and stellar character transcended his natural being. He was larger than life. His presence in any room commanded attention as his magnetic personality attracted people of all walks of life. This was his superpower. He never disappointed in providing timely encouragement, sharing life's perspectives, imparting words of wisdom, and providing inspiration by sharing the benefits of his success and experience, and by celebrating the victories of others. Steven was unapologetically honest and refreshingly genuine in all of his relationships. His unselfishness was on display daily in every word he spoke and in every deed he performed. Steven was always working to improve himself and the lives of those around him. His life's journey was pretty remarkable. He is an alumnus of Lane College where he graduated with a Bachelors of Art, Elementary Education degree and left with a plethora of friends. And more importantly, he left with a lifetime bond with his brothers of Phi Beta Sigma. He also enrolled in a degree program at the University of Tennessee College of Social Work, Memphis and later graduated from Strayer University with a Masters in Education, Organizational Management further establishing an even stronger network of friends and colleagues. He nurtured all of these friendships tirelessly as he felt strongly about manifesting them into family relationships. He worked fervently in the world of politics because being a part of the solution was a driving motivation for him in effecting meaningful and lasting change for entire communities and generations to come. He was very successful in entrepreneurship, real estate and had an extensive history coaching and refereeing basketball at several different levels (NCAA Division 2 and 3, NAIA, JUCCO). He also served on boards for non profit programs such as Big Brothers/Big Sisters. But his lifeโ€™s passion was educating and mentoring his children. His greatest works were the accomplishments of his students in the Memphis City Schools system and, more presently, his Lincoln Elementary School students. The relationships built with his students and colleagues were priceless. He was committed above and beyond the job. He invested personal time and was dedicated to his childrenโ€™s educational and individual success. Steven was relentless instilling in them confidence, knowing their worth and believing in their potential. His efforts demonstrated that they were unequivocally โ€œhis children". He made a lasting impression on all those who crossed his path, but even more impressive was the impact the children made on him; motivating him to get up every day to imagine new, creative ways to reach them, inspire them and pour into them. Steven leaves behind his wife, Gloria Webster, and sisters Stephanie, Cynthia, and Rhonda and a host of nieces, nephews, family, friends and those friends that are like family which are too many to name by name. We celebrate his life because he lived it to the fullest. We honor his life because he exampled a better way of living. We reach high in all that we do because he encouraged us to be great. And we must now journey on wholly fulfilled because he showed us how and believed we could. Steven was many things to many people. And to that end, he will be missed by us all.

The family will privately memorialize Steve on Saturday October 16, 2021 at 4p.m.

Please join us after the memorial from 5:30p.m. until 7:30p.m. at The Pocket, 115 Union Ave, Memphis, TN 38103 for continued reflection and celebration.

He was a total jerk, liar, and loser.

He was a total jerk and loser.

To the family of Steve Webster: May God comfort your hearts and grant you peace. I'm just now learning of Steve's passing a year later. Steve and I mostly kept in touch through Facebook. I took a break from social media to focus on school. So my heart is broken and heavy with sadness from learning of his passing. Steve was a former co-worker and friend. He played a pivotal role in my life when I moved to TN and met him at Hickory Ridge Elementary. He mentored, advised, and kept our team laughing. His death has shocked me, because I just took for granted that he would always be here. The final lesson he has taught me is to stay in touch with your family and friends. Rest In Peace and Love. You are truly missed!!!! Ruthie White

That smile! RIH Steve. Iris Gardner, Lane College '73

May you find comfort knowing your loved one is resting in the arms of Jesus. Steve was my Prince Hall Masonic and Shrine Brother.

Steve and I shared a vision of a utopian education setting where all students were nurtured and were successful. Alas, that vision was never fulfilled, but Steve was a great friend and an inspiring teacher. I helped him begin the chess team at Lincoln Elem. and witnessed the triumph of his team over another in Jackson-Madison County. I will miss our evening meals on the patios of his favorite restaurants. Although I will sorely miss him, the world is a better place because he lived.

Gone too soon, and will never be forgotten. I have so many fun memories for you and my family and I can't thank you enough for all you have done. You taught me what enjoying life is all about, and how to truly educate children. Rest in heaven until we meet again, my friend! --Rachael Clark and Family

On his drives to Fl he would let me know he was coming through. I regret not meeting up with him on his last visit after staying with his friend. Steve was one of a kind and kept us laughing. Steve Webster, you are going to be missed. I remember our first encounter. You taught my daughter math. A subject most kids hate, but you took the kids to a place they could relate. I am ever grateful to you. RIP, you will never be forgot!

My "Bro-law" You will truly be missed. I have nothing but love for you. The dominoes games, of course, you thought you were always good. But I'm better, SHO-NUUFFF! Your sister in-law, Deborah Joplin

I don't know where to begin. Started as my 5th grade teacher and grew to be so much more over 20 years. Your surrogate daughter is what you called me and I wear that badge proudly. Thank you for the many talks, lessons, gems, love and care you showed me throughout our time together. Well done, Mr. Webster. May your soul Rest In Peace. You are truly missed.! Love Always, Desirae P!

The 40 plus years you were of this family, it seems so surreal that you're not here. Your resiliency with a smile and strength always aced any mountain you faced. You were a man of reason and made no excuses to labor, to give of yourself. I'm grateful for how you extended yourself and made some provisions for me and my offsprings. Cherishable, moments! You and Glo had something special, beautiful.

Lord, I ask You to clothe my sister, Gloria, with comfort, strength, peace, for her heaviness and clothe those who are walking with her. I love you.

Missing you. Farewell, Steve. May God have You Rest in Heaven's Place Denise

Steve "Big Red" Webster was one of the first persons to welcome me as a Freshman at Lane College. His larger than life personality certainly caused all to know him to love him. Although his earthly life has been removed from all those who knew, loved and respected him, we know that he has left an indelible mark on the lives of all of us, who were blessed to know him. Take your rest "Big Red". To the family and friends and especially "his students", know that "earth has no sorrow that heaven cannot heal".

Marion Faye Godwin Lane College Class of 1981
