Obituary For Yvonne Guy

The loving, caring, and giving Yvonne Guy said good-bye to her family and friends April 4, 2021 at 7:57 a.m. She was proceeded in death by her parents, the late Allie Joe and Agnes Guy, her siblings, Josephine (Willie) Norman, Bessie Guy, and recently, the late John Albert Guy. Yvonne confessed hope in Christ and joined Taylor Chapel CME Church in Germantown, TN at an early age. The youngest of ten children, she remained in the family home following the loss of our parents. So, she acquired all of the wisdom to help pass on – and did she ever remind us of rights and wrongs and had the last word (when appropriate). Schooling included Collierville Elementary, Messick High, Shelby State, and the University of Memphis. Other than private tutoring, most of her work experience was as a daycare teacher at Union Avenue Child Enrichment Center. Survivors to mourn her passing and cherish her memories are her son, Xavier Jamal (Sherika) Patterson; three grandchildren, Antonio Smith, Aidan and Amerie Patterson; two brothers, Allie Joe (Audrey) Guy, Jr., and David (Maxine) Guy; four sisters, Dorothy (Ray) Jackson, Dr. Hattie (Edward) Isen, and Ann (Cleo) Anderson of Memphis, Tennessee, and Virgie (John) Neville of Des Moines, Iowa, and several nieces, nephews, and relatives. ---------------------------------------------------

Yvonne maintained good memory and it was praised and appreciated. Earlier, she honored each person’s birthday and up to a few months ago, she continued to share gifts with young nieces, nephews, and her grands. During the past year in caring for her, she helped me recall several episodes of my life story. This is a quote about her. “Yvonne Guy is the youngest of my siblings. I will always be grateful for the quality of care she provided for my son when I returned to work. She studied early childhood education and completed almost four years of college but had to withdraw due to illness. One would think she has completed more training with her skillfulness and insight. She is quite sharp and has helped many children accomplish reading and math skills. And she is excellent with arts and crafts. I admire the way she bonds with and supports her only grandchild. She is generous and compassionate. She remembers and acknowledges birthdays in the family and shares gifts, especially with the children. She has unusual strength of faith that is demonstrated in what she says and does. For example, although she does not attend church regularly due to illness, she accessed spirituals and sermons via television and radio, and not just on Sundays. She would also hold devotions with her niece, Anntinette, who resided in Iowa via social media a few years ago.”

A public viewing is scheduled for Friday April 9, 2021 from 4 pm until 6pm at R. S. Lewis and Sons Funeral Home 2944 Walnut Grove Rd. Service of celebration will be Saturday April 10, 2021 at Polk Chapel C.M.E. Church 8534 E Shelby Dr. Interment will follow in Memphis Memorial Gardens 3700 N Germantown Pkwy. All are required to follow CDC Guidelines.
