Kingstree, SC
Dorothy Mae Blackwell Rose, daughter of the late Jimmy Blackwell and Ella Harrison Blackwell Duffin, was born April 17, 1934 in Alcolu, South Carolina. She was preceded in death by four sisters, Elouise Moses, Oneita McFadden, Jannie White and Eunice Witherspoon.
She attended school in Alcolu, South Carolina and later attended Adult Education where she received her high school diploma.
In her youth, she attended Harmony Presbyterian Church USA and later joined Oak Grove African Methodist Episcopal Church in Lake City, South Carolina where she sang on the Gospel Choir. She loved singing with her sisters, “The Blackwell Sisters”
She was employed at Avon Dale in Olanta, South Carolina and Kingstree Retreat Plantation.
She was one that loved doing her gardening and canning.
She was joined in holy matrimony to the late Clyde Dell Rose. Three children, Clyde Rose, Jr., Dorothy Rose and infant John Henry Rose preceded her in death.
On Friday, June 11, 2021, Dorothy Mae Blackwell Rose answered her call at MUSC Health, Florence Medical Center, Florence, South Carolina.
She leaves to cherish her memory eight children: James (Reverend Mary) Rose, Russell (Linda) Rose, Shirley (Daryl) Rogers, Minister Willie Rose, Linda (Ike) Cooper, Jerome (Ann) McFadden, Kathy (Antonio) Hammond and Bessie Washington; daughter-in-law, Mattie Rose; special granddaughter reared in the home, Adrielle Cooper; one brother, Emmanuel Blackwell; two sisters, Shirley Evans and Celestine Myers; a sister-in-law, Odessa Rose; a brother-in-law, Heyward Moses; special niece, Keya (William) Clevland; seventeen additional grandchildren; thirty-six great grandchildren; three great, great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Mrs. Rose were held 11:00 AM Wednesday, June 16, 2021 at Oak Grove AME Church, Lake City, SC, Rev. Oliver Davis, Pastor officiated, Rev. Shernard Barnes presided, Rev. Harry Brown assisted. Burial followed in Old McFadden Cemetery, Lake City, SC.
The family is received friends from 3:00PM til 7:00PM daily at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, James and Rev. Mary Rose, 72 Topaz Ave., Kingstree, SC.
