Ervin Bethune, affectionately called, “Pee Wee”, son of the late Deacon Lawson Bethune, Sr. and Josephine Heyward Bethune was born in Sumter County on September 14, 1946. He was preceded in death by a brother, Lawson Bethune, Jr.
“Pee Wee” received his formal education in the Clarendon County Public Schools and graduated from Manning Training School in Manning, South Carolina in 1967. He was a lifelong member of Holly Hill Missionary Baptist Church in the Bloomville Community of Manning, South Carolina. He loved baseball and even played as a young adult for the Sugar Hill Baseball Team. He was employed with Flora Daniels Construction, Georgia Pacific, ITT Lumber Company, Stuckey Lumber Company, Haley Farms and TT Farms for several years. After retiring, he just loved working on cars and helping others. He was one that loved to have fun especially with his friends from Pompey Town and his nieces and nephews. “Pee Wee” humorous personality and love for helping people was admired by everyone in his presence. He was joined in holy matrimony to Rose Anna G. Bethune. Early Sunday morning, September 19, 2021, God saw that “Pee Wee” was ready to play on his heavenly team. Many are saddened by his departure, many are also left to cherish his memories. He leaves to cherish his memories, a loving and devoted wife of 44 years, Rose Anna Gibbs Bethune of the home; a daughter, Rethel “Lucy” Gill of California; one brother, Donald L. (Evangelist Mary) Bethune of Manning, SC; one special grandnephew in whom his eyes weren’t big enough to see, Seth Bethune of Manning, SC; adopted family of the late William and Mazie York of Manning, SC and their children which were his brothers and sisters; special friends, Jack Frazier, Ralph Space, Clyde Ard, Tommy Thompson and Chris Barfield; a host of sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, special nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, other relatives and friends.
Public viewing was held from 4:00PM til 6:00 PM Friday, September 24, 2021 at Hayes F. Samuels, Sr. Memorial Chapel, 114 N. Church St., Manning, SC.
Graveside services were held 11:00AM Saturday, September 25, 2021 at Holly Hill Missionary Baptist Church, 1304 Hidden Branch Road, Manning, SC. Rev. Betty A. Cantey, Officiated; Pastor Louis Hilton, Jr., Rev. Joyce Whack, Elder Allen Whack and Rev. Rebecca York, assisted.
Due to COVID-19 guidelines, the family is not receiving visitors.
My husband and I have had the pleasure of being neighbors with Pee Wee and his wife. I will forever miss seeing you ride your lawnmower waving and stopping to talk. Rest In Peace my friend and we will all take care of your wife until we can all meet again. Love you all.
