On Thursday, March 11, 2021 our dear heavenly Father in his infinite wisdom chose to take our beloved one, Robert Doughty, from his earthly home to a place of rest.

Robert Doughty was born in Manning, South Carolina on March 11, 1940. He is the second child of Willie Doughty and Eva McFadden Doughty. Upon the death of his parents: his beloved Uncle William and Louise Berry raised Robert along with his sisters Wilhelmena and Mildred and two deceased brothers James Lee Doughty and Marvin Doughty.

Robert joined Trinity AME Church (Manning, SC) at an early age. He graduated High School at Manning Training School in 1958. While studying, he worked at his family’s black-owned restaurant, café and candy store (Manning, SC) After graduation, Robert migrated to New York City. He supported himself by working hard all the time. Deciding to further his training; he entered The Pierce Electronic School of New York City where he graduated at the top of his class in 1962.

On June 22, 1963 he married his High School sweetheart, Ida Ruth Lemon. They were married 32 years until September of 1995, when Ida passed away. To this union three children were born: 2 sons Kedjo Doughty, Taiye Doughty and one daughter Asheki Doughty.

The ladder of success began when Robert joined The Sony Corporation as an Electronic Technician. He rose to become the Plant Manager of two Sony cites, The Thomas Avenue building in Queens and the Mahwah Building in New Jersey. During his 33 years there, he established himself with promotion after promotion as a prestigious business leader. These years gave him the skills and the confidence to open his first business in 1978. “The Doughty Wine and Liquor Emporium” in Harlem, New York which stood for 16 years. He also owned and operated another business he named “Cut Rate TV Repair” located on 2338 Eighth Avenue, Harlem, NYC and lastly “The Star Bar and Grill” in Mount Vernon, New York- which was a mecca of fun, fellowship, food and frolic for the Mount Vernon “Jet Set”.

In addition to Robert’s success in the business industry; he became a Mason and a Shriner in 1991 and was an Alumni Member of the Local Boys & Girls Club. He travelled extensively throughout the United States, Mexico and the Caribbean. He became a generous contributor to several African-American students in the furthering of their education. He was a supporting sponsor for children recreational activities in Mount Vernon. While living in Mt. Vernon, he attended the Greater Centennial AME Zion Church, Rev. Dr. Stephen W. Pogue, Pastor. After returning home, he attended Ebenezer Baptist Church of Manning, Rev. Dr. George P. Windley, Pastor, and also Orangehill Independent Methodist Church of Wedgefield, SC where his nephew, Rev. Darrell A James , is the pastor. His greatest and only hobby was fishing.

He leaves to cherish his memory - Two sons: Kedjo Doughty, Taiye (Jennine) Doughty; one daughter Asheki Doughty. Four Grandchildren: Ashlei /Joshua/Khalri and Jacob. Two Great Grandchildren: Javir and Hendryxx, three sisters: Wilhelmena D. McCray of Orlando, Fla / Vertell (Luther) Ragin and Mildred D. Williams of Manning, SC and a close cousin who was raised with Robert and his siblings Nathaniel (Fran) Wilson of Bronx, NY and Yvonne Doughty of Poughkeepsie, NY. His beloved In-laws: Moses (Sarah) Lemon of Bronx, NY, Rebecca (Leon) Riley of Baltimore, MD, Wilbert (Ethel) Lemon of Manning, SC, Ann (Bill) Rogers of Lexington, NC. Helen (John) Clark of Manning, SC, Maggie (Earl) Robertson of Manning, SC, Bill (Doris) Lemon of Manning, SC, Nancy Lemon of Manning, SC and a host of Nieces, Nephews and extended family members.

Funeral services for Mr. Doughty will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, March 20, 2021 at Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, 114 N. Church Street, Manning, SC. Minister Krystal Nicholson, officiating; Minister Sandra Wise and Rev. Darrell James, Assisting.

We would be remiss if we did not thank the following individuals and medical facilities: Alice Wade, Charles Smith, the Staff of Crescent Hospice of Sumter and McCoy Memorial Nursing Home of Bishopville, SC. Thank you so much for standing in the gap when needed.
