Deacon Samuel Bass was born June 13, 1948, to the late Otis Rufus Bass, Sr. and the late Obzeen Moore Bass, and to this union four children were born in Nashville, Ga. On Thursday, May 22, 2025, God called Deacon Bass to his Heavenly Home.
He was a member of Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Dr. Norman J. Edwards. He served as the Assistant Chairman of the Deacon Board, Sunday School Superintendent, Pulpit Attendant, Communion Steward, Baptism Assistant, member of the Finance and Benevolent Committee and whatever capacity that he saw a need.
Sam was employed at Colquitt EMC as a maintenance technician, and general laborer. He touched the lives of many people, and he will be truly missed by those who came in contact with him, blew their horn at him as they passed by, or saw him at Sam's Club.
Sam was a baseball umpire for sixty years. In June 2005, Field #1 at Nat Hudson Park in Nashville, Georgia was dedicated and named in honor of him. He will be truly missed as he was very well know and loved by all.
He was preceded in death by his father Otis Rufus Bass, Sr., mother Obzeen Moore Bass, father-in-law Ray Black, and brother-in-law Marc Black.
He died peacefully at home and leaves to cherish his memories: a loving and devoted wife Sanchious Carter Bass who was by his side until the end; three brothers: Elbert Bass of Gainesville, FL, Otis Bass of Moultrie, Ga., and Wendall Bass of Nashville, Ga., mother-in-law Delores Black of Valdosta, Ga., sister-in-law Tonya (Richard) Brown of Valdosta, Ga., two brothers-in-law Reginald Black and Clayton Black both of Valdosta, Ga.; a special aunt, Wanda Carter of Hahira, Georgia, who is a meal provider and community cook special cousins and assistant caregivers Gerrilyn (Sissy) and Jarod Herring (nephew) both of Hahira, Ga.; god children: Tanya Witherspoon of South Carolina, Michell Troy and Patrina Bowles of Valdosta, Ga.; god children and assistant caregivers Vanessa Copeland, Jakora Williams, Azjhiah Thomas, all of Valdosta, Ga.; and a host of loving aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A celebration of life for Deacon Samuel Bass will be held on Saturday, May 31, 2025 at 11:00 A. M. at Mt Olive Missionary Baptist Church Rev. Norman Edwards is the pastor and will be officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Public viewing will be held on Friday, May 30, from 10:00 A.M. til 7:00 P. M.

I first met you while I was working at the Cook County Health Department years ago, and I do mean years ago. You came by to see my friend and co-worker Sanchious(Sam). You were such a gentleman. I think she loved you even then, but she didn't initially admit it. You married my friend, so I knew you were a good man. Your time here on this side has come and gone now. I grew up in Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church with some of the most amazing people . Deacon Bass was the sweetest and we had the most fun during VBS ! I will never ever forget the impact you had on my life as a child through your kindness , smile and beautiful heart. Praying for Sis Bass and the entire family ❤️
We are very fortunate Sam shared 26 years of his life with us at Colquitt EMC. Sam was always concerned with doing a great job and taking care of everything and everybody. We are blessed for having such a good friend.

At this time we celebrate Sam's life. I will always cherish and never forget. Those summers that we spent together laughing and playing as our father's, my dad known as uncle Josh and your dad uncle Otis brought us together. Those were some glorious and unforgettable days. I worked with Sam at EMC. He was a wonderful man to be around. He always wanted to know if everything was okay. I will miss his smile and great humor to lighten the day. God bless you Sam.

My condolences to Sam's family. I thought a lot of Mr. Sam. He umpire a many of my little league baseball and city league softball games in Berrien county. When he went to work for Colquitt EMC, I was working for CED Valdosta and when I would make deliveries to them I would be sure to look him up just to say hi and he always had to know the latest news going on in the city of Nashville. I'm going to miss you my friend!! I find comfort that you are with our Lord and Savior!
Had the pleasure to work with Mr. Sam at Colquitt EMC. He never met a stranger and always had a smile on his face. We had many conversations about God and and just life in general. Thanks for always being a wonderful friend I'll miss you. Praying for the Bass family.

So sorry for the loss of such a fine young man, from the first time he called a ballgame for my son Phil Conner, I have thought the world of this man!! He was an inspiration to so many young people in sports and to adults also! You go and soar with the angels and call a few games in heaven , I know Phil is waiting to hear "STRIKE".
