Obituary For Mother Hattie Mae Williams

Mrs. Hattie Mae Wright Williams was born on October 7, 1932 to the late Madie and Joseph Wright of Hahira, Ga. She was educated at Mineola School and graduated from Webb Miller School in 1950. Mother went on to receive her Master of Cosmetology degree from Albany Technical College in 1952. She then opened the first hair salon in Hahira, established in 1951. She had the longest running African American owned business, Hattie’s Beauty Shop, in Hahira. Later on, when her sister returned from Florida, the beauty salon was named, Hattie’s and Claudia’s Beauty Shop. On August 11, 1957, Mother Williams married the love of her life, Deacon John Wesley Williams. They were blessed to be married for 60 years.

Mother Williams is proceeded in death by her mother and father, her sister, Claudia Mae Wright Mathis, her brother, Joseph Wright, Jr., three sons: Wesley Jerome Williams, Henry Roger Williams, Phillip Carlton Williams, and one step-daughter, Helen Gillard.

Mother Williams leaves to cherish her memories her three children: Mrs. Madie-Teresa (Dexter) Battles of Hahira, GA, Bishop Eddie Calvin (Rona) Williams of Lawrenceville, GA, and Ms. Alchanda Harrison of Hahira, GA, step children Curtis Williams, Sr., Henry Butler, and Mary West, two sisters, Ola Mae Turner and Christine Wright both of Stone Mountain, GA; six grandchildren and a host of other grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, five of whom she assisted in raising - Columbus Mathis, Jr. who proceeded her in death, Claudia Marie Mathis-Williams (Ernest), Angela Denise Gant (Marlon), Christopher Lee Mathis and Jerry Alphonzo Mathis (Yolanda); cousins, and sorrowing friends.

Home going for Mother Hattie Mae Williams will be held on Saturday, March 9 at 11:00 A. M. at North Valdosta Church of God Bishop Johnnie Quarterman is the pastor and Archbishop Quintard S. Caldwell, D.D. Th.D. Eulogist. Burial will follow in the Rocky Hill Cemetery.
