Obituary For Ms. Dorothy McCaskill

Dorothy Ernestine (Register) Bass McCaskill was born to Audra and Perry Register on March 13, 1933, in
Valdosta, GA. Dorothy, affectionately known as Stine, was the oldest daughter of eleven children.

Raised in the era of the Great Depression, Dorothy was taught useful habits of frugal living. It was said
that she could cut slices of cake so paper thin you could see through them.

Dorothy yearned for advancement in life, and was convinced that attaining a good education was the
key to success. The story is told that as a teenager, she picked cotton in the searing hot fields for little
pay. One day, she looked up to heaven and vowed before God, if the Lord got her out of that cotton
field, she nor her children would ever work in another cotton field again!

After graduating in the top of her class at Dasher High School, Dorothy enrolled at Fort Valley State
College, an historically Black, land-grant college founded in 1895 by former slaves. Her dream of earning
a college degree was dashed when the financial help she was receiving from her family ran out.

Dorothy persevered. She moved to Detroit, lived with a kind relative, worked and saved her money,
intending to resume her studies. That is, until a tall, dark and handsome gentleman from her high school
days in Valdosta wooed her and persuaded her to join him in Jersey City, NJ. Reuben S. Bass proposed
marriage, Dorothy accepted, the young couple wed on July 5, 1951, and from this union, five children
were born.

In 1972, Dorothy saw an opportunity to resume her education. She enrolled in Jersey City State College,
majored in mathematics, and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. As a testament to Dorothy’s dedication
to higher education, all five children earned college degrees.

After her husband Reuben Bass’ untimely death in 1976, Dorothy became a single parent and supported
herself and her youngest son.

Romance bloomed again when Robert E. McCaskill, a widower and old high school classmate, got wind
of Dorothy’s changed marital status, and began a courtship that led to marriage on July 1, 1978. With
Eric in tow, Dorothy relocated to Valdosta to set up housekeeping with Robert in their hometown.
Robert’s five children and Dorothy’s five children became a blended family.

Dorothy was employed by the Park Avenue Bank where she rose through the ranks to the position of
head of the bookkeeping department, retiring after 25 years of distinguished service.

Dorothy was a devoted member of River Street Church of Christ, Valdosta, GA. She knew the lyrics of
scores of hymns which she loved to sing during Sunday church services. She was a skilled seamstress, a
gracious hostess, and an avid bowler, and she loved tending her plants and flowers.

I had the honor of attending River Street Church of Christ with both Mr. & Mrs. McCaskill here in Valdosta in my youth. They were both the kindest individuals anyone could ever encounter. She can rest in God's care.

To the Bass family, Yvette, Alicia, Butch, Eileen and Eric, please accept our sincere and heartfelt condolences on the passing of your Mother from the Thompson's of Jersey City. Our early, teenage, and adult lives are so intertwined with you. While we now live in different geographic areas, we think of you often and you will always be a part of our lives. We grew up at a time when our friends mom's were like our moms so we will never forget Mrs. Bass – McCaskill. Our family will keep you in prayer. Love from, Jewel, Charles, and Betty Thompson.
