In addition to the devastation of being wounded in combat, Edgar was exposed to Agent Orange. In his final months, he was not the Edgar Roberts that we all knew, love, and respect. The ravages of war had taken their toll on him. How many of his friends were caught up in the devastation, suffered numerous illnesses both mental and physical, and in the end suffered prior to their death, is beyond our imagination. One thing that we do know is that Edgar was indeed a virtual Tower of Strength and Guiding Light.

In 2017, Edgar met a stranger, John Branson from Indiana, in a Cracker Barrel Restaurant where he began to reminiscing about his life in the Marine Corp. It was the Marine Corp hat that Edgar wore that caught the attention of John Branson because he has a son in the Marine Corp. After hearing his story, and by the grace of God, John volunteered to donate one of his kidneys. This began a fruitful relationship. This miracle event in 2017 resulted in the successful surgeries for both men.

The last time I seen him was when he pulled up in my driveway in a golf cart. He had not seen me since I came back from Alaska. We chatted about the VA and laughed when I told him I dislike driving all the way to Lake City just to get a cat scan done. He said you earned free service just have to get there. Little did I know he would spend quite a long time there. He will be missed by many.
