Who was Andrew Johnson

There are so many memories I have of my dad. One of my happiness memories is the two trips dad made to Florida in March and November, 2017. In November we spent 10 wonderful days, just the two of us, traveling around the state, on a great daddy-daughter πŸ’œadventure. Now to tell you a few things you may not know about my dear father. Where do you start when trying to sum up 91 years of life. Probably at the beginning, born to James and Florence Johnson April 16, 1929, the youngest of 3 brothers Paul and Bernard, outside of Richmond. Florence died while dad was a toddler and her sister Princetta Wilkerson raised him. He attended Second Bethel Baptist Church. I have some of his elementary report cards so he was a good student. Dad attended and graduated from Virginia Randolph High School and later attended Virginia Union University for a couple of years. While working at a drugstore in Richmond, that he walked to from the country, he met Mabel Hill who became the love of his life for 69 years until her death in 2017. Three children were born into this union, Maureen, Andrew and Darlene. We were some of the first residents of Eastview community, the first Black subdivision in Richmond. Dad and mom were very active in the civic association becoming president, along with being president of the PTA at Whitcomb Court Elementary school. We lived a happy life with frequent road trips to the mountains and local beaches. The family moved to Washington DC in the late 60s where dad continued his government service as a letter carrier until he retired. In the final years of his tenure, dad became the president of local 142 for the National Association of Letter Carriers and also served as Vice President of the state Union. Yes dad was always very active and willing to help anyone that he could. Upon moving back to Richmond, he and mom joined First Baptist Church of South Richmond where he served as a Deacon, choir member and any other capacity that was needed. These are just a few of the things this great man accomplished in his 91 years. He will be greatly missed by many. Though I will not be there to greet you, I wish to extend my thanks and gratitude to everyone that sent up prayers and thoughts during Dad's brief illness. Maureen Johnson

I was saddened to hear of the loss of our beloved Deacon Johnson. I recall as a young girl getting into an accident on the corner of the church and this wonderful man came to court to testify on my behalf. He will be sorely missed. My prayers of comfort go out to the entire family. Michelle McQueen-Williams FBC So. Richmond

First, let me express my deepest sympathy to the Johnson family. Andrew was a great man, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, friend, and Deacon of the Church. Having known Andrew for so long, I cannot remember the circumstance under which we first met. I have so much to thank him for; but let me say that my family appreciated the trust he had in us to allow Lolita to be a part of our family when we took yearly trips to Myrtle Beach. Andrew will always be remembered.

My Dad, my Buddy, my Friend and my Rock. The best Dad anyone could have. He never spoke loudly but his actions spoke in volumes. I'll miss you but it's time to celebrate your life for the works you have done. Love, Andrew Jr.

Deacon Johnson had my husband's and my deepest respect. He was asked and graciously offered prayer at our wedding reception.

Johnson Family: Our thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of grief.Barbara Price sadden to hear of the loss of your cousin. Cloyd & Margaret Moore

As a child I spent most of my summers and holidays with my Uncle Andrew and Aunt Mabel. He was like a father when my Dad was away serving his country. My heart aches but I know he is in a better place.I love and will miss you so much. Be strong my family!

Our staff will continue to keep your family in our prayers. We thank you for allowing us to serve your family.
