Obituary For Avis Goree Kennedy

Avis G. Kennedy, 90, of Richmond, died September 13, 2020. She was the daughter of the late Watson and Maggie Settle Smith. She was preceded in death by six sons, Israel, Michael, Leon, Jerome, Edward and Bruce Kennedy; seven brothers, Lawrence, Clarence, Oscar, James, John Marshall, Willie and David and four sisters, Lucille, Lillie, Betty and Katie Surviving are her son, Warren A. Kennedy of Oregon; a host of grandchildren, one devoted, Athaba Thomas; great grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; other relatives and friends. She was a faithful member of Fifth Baptist Church. Remains rest at Scott's Funeral Home, 115 E. Brookland Park Blvd. where viewing will be held from 12 noon to 8 p.m. Friday, September 18. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, September 19 at Scott's Chapel, 116 E. Brookland Park Blvd. Dr. Earl M. Brown officiating. Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery. On behalf of the Kelly family, please accept our sincere sympathy. I always considered myself Ms. Avis' 8th son. Ed Kennedy (Axe) was one of my best friends in high school and I spent a lot of time at the Kennedy household. Ms. Kennedy was always warm and friendly but she didn't mind correcting us when we got out of line. Warren took me on like a little brother when I joined the Air Force and got stationed overseas. I was friends with all of her sons and each of them reflected her warmth and indomitable spirit. She will be missed but leaves behind a lasting legacy. Prayers for her family. May she Rest In Peace. To my dear mom may you forever Rest in Heaven with my brothers and all your family members. I will miss our over two hour conversations by phone or in person. Even if our conversations were much shorter at the end. But I will always remember a few years ago you saying to me over the phone five short words, Warren (How are you doing?) You will always be my QUEEN of HEARTS. I look forward to seeing you in heaven so we can have those long conversations again.
