Obituary For Calvin Lamar Gore

On Saturday, October 26th, 2024, Calvin Lamar Gore quietly passed away surrounded by loved ones. He was one of nine children of the late Margaret and Raleigh Gore, born in Nashville, Tennessee on January 4th, 1947.

Growing up in Nashville, Calvin attended Pearl High School, the most prominent Black high school in the city and the first public school for Black students in Nashville. He was an active member of his community and deeply involved in his church, where he showed his love for music by founding the junior choir.

After leaving the Army, Calvin began working as a security guard at Fisk University where he met his wife, Cassandra Dayton. The two married in 1974 and built a beautiful life together, blessed with two children — Michelle and Darnell (Alex). Their bond grew from a shared respect and admiration, and together they built a life filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories. Calvin’s dedication to his family and work was unwavering, and his warmth touched all who knew him.

After moving to Richmond, Virginia, Calvin continued his dedication to faith and community. He became an active member of First Baptist Church of South Richmond, he was on the male Usher board and shared his passion for music by founding the men’s choir. He remained actively involved until his health declined, which eventually made it difficult for him to participate in church activities.

In 1981, Calvin began working at Philip Morris USA. After dedicating thirty years to the company, he retired in 2009.

Calvin, affectionately called “Papa” by his grandchildren, is survived by two children, Michelle Gore-Anderson, Darnell A. Gore. His four siblings, Kenneth Gore, Gary Gore, Raleigh Gore and Donzaleigh Petway. He leaves behind seven grandchildren, Domicha R. Gore, Erika B. Gore, Coniyah M. Gore, Malia N. Clarke, Courtney R. Anderson, Cornelius Anderson Jr. and Cornell L. Anderson.

Remains rest at Scott's Funeral Home, 115 E. Brookland Park Blvd., where viewing will be held Tuesday, November 5 from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 6 at First Baptist Church South Richmond, 1501 Decatur Street. Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery.
