First my condolences to the Patterson Family. I lived across the street from Carl. We played basketball, table tennis, croquet and football. One day my brother Michael Ray had me and Carl playing football against each other. Mike was the quarterback for me and Carl. Carl ran the ball and I tackled, then I ran the ball and Carl tackled me. He was younger than me but he did not back down. Carl was competitive. He was smart and a great drummer. I am going to miss him and I know he is with the Lord. A young man gone to soon but God will take care him. RIP Pooh, Eggo.
Our deepest prayers and condolences to the family of Everett Carl "Pooh" Patterson. We are truly shocked and taken aback by the news of Carl's passing. We shared so many wonderful and fun memories with Pooh, as he always kept a smile, the beat, and his "Fro" together, always!

I am at a loss of words after hearing of the passing of my dear friend Carl. We were great buddies as kids and spent many a day over each others homes. There are so many great memories that I could write a book about some of our wild adventures. I will remember him for his crazy laugh and great sense of humor. I will remember us playing basketball, reading comics and using cardboard boxes as drums. He was smart, friendly and kind and will be sorely missed. To his family my most sincere condolences. To Eric, Ken and Bernita know that you are in my prayers. May God provide comfort at this difficult time. Take your rest my brother. Meet you on the other side. Your buddy always Don Wiley

Vanessa and EJ,
There are no adequate words for this moment. Ahtough we were born in the same year, Carl wound up being a year ahead of me with my sister at Alma J. Brown. Yet, I was fortunate to have had an easy and enduring friendship across time and distance. We reconnected 16 months ago in Richmond and were able to pick up where we left off. He was one of few Grambling friends that my husband actually joined in conversation with! That is saying something!
We had briefly chatted for his birthday, a date that has been stuck in my memory for ages!
My fond memories include stage band and concert band trips, being in math classes together, seeing him hanging strong with my brothers and other members of Leech and the gang, and our long discussions when we came home over college breaks.
He spoke of your plans for reitrement, Vanessa, and how wonderful it was that neither of you had to report to anyone after 30 years.
EJ, when we last saw one another, he beamed with pride at your accomplishments, writing, and strength. He may have talked about not studying (as you reference in your personal profile of him), but that was because he was really intelligent, smart, and quick to study and learn.
Bernita, Ken, and Eric, I can't imagine the loss you feel at this time as you say final goodbyes to your little brother.
Carl was a cherished friend. I will miss the rich and joyful conversations. I will miss the opportunity to continue to see where life took him. Please know that all of you are in my heart.
Holding you in prayer,
Rev. Dollie Howell Pankey (AJB '81) Birmingham, Alabama

No words or phrases can relay how deeply saddened I am by the news of Carl’s passing. To Vanessa and EJ - I send all the love from all the memories of all the moments in time I spent with your Husband and Father. I can’t scratch the surface of all the memories shared Carl, JBird, and myself, but the constant was Carl’s ability to always be there, ready to help and when necessary- take up the fight for the cause at hand. How blessed my wife Cheryle and I felt when Carl and Vanessa were able to attend our wedding. He was a man of honor and integrity and this world is colder without his presence. I’ll cherish the memories and thru them Carl will always be with me and in every conversation, I have about him. I know his memories will never leave his beloved family and thru those memories you’ll have the warmth of his love and the constant reminder of his undying dedication to his Wife and Son! Wayne
Praying for Vanessa & son Condolences & Love!
What sad news is this. My prayers go to the family during your period of loss. It is my prayer that the Lord shows his presence and you lean on him for strength. I had the honor of playing beside Pooh during high school. My sister and I were responsible for hiding Pooh in some of those dressing rooms during the Leech and the Gang years. Many good times and memories. To his son, I read your article on your dad and know he did not stretch the truth on any of it. It all happened as he told you. Be bless and hold to God's unchanging hand. He will lead you thru. Joseph Capers (Bass) League City Texas
My heart goes out the family we’ve lost a very special human being Carl was my friend for life! Even though I haven’t spoken to him in some time our years growing up were full of adventure and excitement even in the small town of Grambling. We were so cool as eighth graders we started our own fraternity. We were K Phi K for born cool. We had a rumble with the seniors we showed up with stink bombs no way we could compete physically but they backed down didn’t want to get stinky! I’ll never forget a major road trip we took as juniors in high school we represented the school as young future engineers. We showed up spoke up in front of an audience larger than we’d seen noting we had not been properly informed regarding the voting procedures for officers I ended of the VP of Junior Engineering Technical Society for the state of Louisiana. Another trip no idea how our parents allowed on this trip to LSU but Carl, Wayne and I again made an impactful impression the Engineering faculty we all had opportunities to attend LSU. The road trip home we sang most of the way to stay awake and keep warm lucky my lil Toyota brought us home in one piece after almost swimming in the Mississippi River during a major storm we had wonderful high school years!! I cherish all those memories dearly until we meet again my brother. JBird.
