Obituary For Frances Hackett Sampson

Frances Elizabeth Hackett Sampson was born on September 3, 1928, in Richmond, Virginia and passed peacefully on Wednesday, April 1, 2020. She was born to the late Doc Jefferson and Ida Hall Hackett. All her life, she has resided at 1504 W. Leigh Street in the historic Jackson Ward of Richmond, Virginia and was one of four children (Pearl Charles Sr., and Lloyd). She is a product of the Richmond Public School system and a proud 1945 graduate of Maggie Lena Walker High School. There, she was Captain of the Girl’s basketball team. During a game, Frances scored all the points and they called her “Hooks”. After graduation, she studied business at Virginia Union University. Frances accepted Christ at an early age and joined Moore Street Missionary Baptist Church. She served as a member of the Flower Guild, Hospitality Committee, Sisterhood Committee and was Leader of the Youth Usher Board for many years She began her career as a radiology technician at the Richmond Gastroenterology Association under Dr. Morey, Dr. Caravati and Dr. Regan and retired after 38 years of service. Her employer's rewarded her with an all-expense paid trip with her son Marvin to visit London, England. She was hired as the first African American to be employed in that medical office. She became a member of the Cavalier Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association and served many years. Frances traveled on several bus trips to attend Broadway plays, attended R&B concerts and college football games. Frances was the only driver in the house. We remember her driving the VW beetle with stick shift all the way to EastGate Mall. At 1504 W. Leigh St, the kitchen was the main hub of the household and her sister Pearl enjoyed cooking and Frances maintained the outside of the house by working in the yard and cutting the grass. Frances was always a fashion diva She had immense love and was proud of her family. She was adamant for maintaining family traditions. Frances treasured and loved all of her friends and appreciated their relationships. None of us know the day or hour when we will be called to rest from our labor. Frances received her call after a very brief illness and will be sorely missed by all of us who loved her. Frances was preceded in death by her son (Marvin) and sister (Pearl). She leaves behind to cherish her memories a devoted nephew, Dr. Charles J. Hackett, Jr.; devoted nieces, Anita G. Hackett, Loretta F. Hackett and Jill H. Dandridge (Jeff); 3 great nieces; one great nephew; one great-great niece; 3 great-great nephews and a host of other relatives, neighbors and devoted friends. We will miss you Frances!!! Remains rest at Scott's Funeral Home, 115 E. Brookland Park Blvd. Private funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, April 6 at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
