We pass on our condolences to the Perkins family. Ham(Pig) Perkins was a big brother to me when I enrolled at VSU in 1967. His brother Wendell, and my brother attended St Paul's College together and he was always a quiet, soft spoken nice guy until he put on the pads. He took care of me as well as his roommate(Dewey Helms) God bless the family and may you truly find comfort in the arms of the Father during this most difficult time. In loving memory Raymond "Frog" Carey and Joyce Boykin Carey
As my first roommate at Virginia State he was my brother away from home. As a teammate on the football team he protected me on every snap of the ball. You have our heartfelt sympathy. Dewey and Camille Helms.
Perk Perk was my friend, co-worker and confidante at Mosby Middle School. We enjoyed working together and he taught me how to teach a few fundamental skills during our football unit to our students. He was a gentle man and when asked a question, he would pause, think about it, clear his throat and then give me an answer. He was fair but firm with his students. He was well respected by everyone. Ella always kept me up to date on Perk Perk whenever I saw her. Ella, you and your family have my deepest sympathy and may Perk Perk's soul rest in peace. Sincerely, Janice Ryles

Words fail to express my sorrow for your loss. Mr. Perkins was my gymnastics coach at John F. Kennedy High School. Without his commitment and dedication, it would have been unlikely that I would have had the opportunity to become a collegiate athlete in a sport that I loved. He was a kind gentle soul! I will always remember his kindness to me and my sisters as athletes and his encouragement to us with our education. I hope that you have some comfort in learning the positive impact that he has had on many former students. He was a great fatherly mentor. I will continue to pray for your family with hopes that today's sadness will be replaced with joyous memories. Monica L. Manns, JFK '74 and Gymnastics Team Member
