Leonardo A. “Chap” Chappelle, 86, peacefully passed away January 23, 2022, at his home in Phoenix, AZ. He was born June 18, 1935 in Richmond, VA to Thomas L. Chappelle and Elsie Lightfoot Chappelle. Chap was a Graduate of Virginia Union University class of 1957, also a Member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Gamma Chapter. He went on to obtain his J.D. from Howard University Law School. Chap then began to forge a career in practicing law, local government, and private sector which spanned four decades. During his retirement in Phoenix, because of his love for jazz music he taught a music appreciation class for several years at Arizona State University. Chap is survived by his son Quincy Leonardo Chappelle and Fiancé Valeta E. Sutton, and Granddaughter Olivia Monet Chappelle and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

He was a kind and loving grandpa who loved to hear about accomplishments of others. He would always send thoughtful gifts for every holiday when I was growing up to show he cared and was thinking about me. Even though he was fat he was always in his hearts. I'm just glad I could talk to him during his last couple of days. Will always be my guardian angel.
