Mary Elizabeth Greene Kidd was born on September 10, 1935 in New York City. She was the seventh of nine children born to the late Rufus and Rutha Greene. Mary was educated in the Newark (NJ) and the New York City Public School Systems. She attended St. Augustine University in Raleigh, NC, where she received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education. Mary later received a Master of Arts Degree from Seton Hall University in South Orange, NJ. Mary accepted Christ at an early age and joined the Pilgram Baptist Church in Newark, NJ. She remained at this church until she relocated to North Chesterfield, VA where she joined and remained a lifetime member at Second Baptist Church in Chester, VA. Mary was united in Holy Matrimony to Robert “Bobby” Kidd on November 18, 1961. They truly adored each other and loved to travel the country to various barbecue festivals and contests. God blessed their union with two daughters. At the age of twenty-five Mary eagerly and successfully put her degrees to use in the Newark (NJ) school system where she was a champion for literacy. She was recognized as a Certified Reading Specialist, Remedial Reading Resource Teacher, for fifteen years. She tutored students after school from her home and was even listed in the Who’s Who: Biographical Record Child Development Professionals, 1977 Edition. Additionally, Mary went on to work at Montclair State College where she continued her literary work as an Adjunct Professor. Mary was ambitious and had an entrepreneurial spirit. She had an eye for fashion and loved to sew which sparked her decision to launch her own boutique called “The Closet Shop”. She had a flair for style and helped many of her customers coordinate outfits as they enjoyed shopping in her boutique. Mary was well-rounded and had many hobbies and interests. She had a green thumb and enjoyed caring for plants & flowers. Her other joys included drawing, cooking, music and theater. Mary was exquisite! She shared her passion for education, arts, fashion, culture with all who embraced with her. Mary truly valued family. She loved and enjoyed her siblings. To say that they had a unique, strong bond is an understatement. They talked several times a day on the phone and visited each other as often as they could. Mary leaves to cherish her memory, her husband Robert Kidd (the love of her life), their dearly loved son through marriage, Donnie (Doris) Kidd, daughters Kim Kidd and Gina (Timothy) Wiggins, her grandchildren: Brandon (Heather) Bonawitz-Kidd, Cydni Wiggins and Elijah Wiggins; her great-grandchildren: Aria Bonawitz-Kidd and Luca Bonawitz-Kidd. Her brother William Morris (Yvonne) Greene (with whom she shared a special bond); Her sisters-in-love, Clara K. Freeman and Dorothy Kidd; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents Rufus and Rutha Greene, her brother Rufus (Romie) Greene, her five sisters Roxie Sherrod, Inez Daniels, Baby Ruth McClain, Annie Adele Johnson and Lucille Wells. Remains rest at Scott's Funeral Home, 115 E. Brookland Park Blvd. Where viewing will be held Friday, November 1 from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, November 2 at Second Baptist Church, 5100 W.
